Of course not everyone who enjoys rural living or fishing, etc. are folks of low IQ (I live in the sticks and enjoy many of those activities). I'm just saying that there are a ton of statistical correlations between low intelligence and more rural lifestyles. This is, to my mind, largely due to the lack of money spent on/available to spend on good education in rural areas (though it isn't the only reason). Some of the poorest educated counties in this country are often the ones where the "redneck lifestyle" is more prominent and celebrated, regardless of their position vis a vis the Mason-Dixon line. Everything I have seen or heard about the DD folks suggests that they revel in being associated with this culture, which has this stigma of "low intelligence" associated with it. It seems that a lot of the humor on this show (like Honey Boo Boo and similar before) comes from poking fun at how dimwitted these people can be, willfully adhering to the negative stereotype or trying to reclaim it as something positive ("it's ok to be dumb - look how much money we made!").
You cant compare this to honey boo boo. These are successful businessman. They do some slapstick and haha this guy is dumb humor stuff sometimes but they also focus on a lot of family stuff. I can see why it is very appealing its audience. It is above Lary the Cable Guy.

Take that up with God. He's was quoting a Bible verse. In the Bible, being homosexual is a sin. The church's stance on it is hate the sin, not the sinner.

It's actually one of the things that's splitting the church apart. Because some people take it as a free pass to discriminate the hell out of gay people, when that's not what's supposed to be happening. Those kind of people forgot this verse: "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." And this one: "Judge not lest ye be judged."\

EDIT: Oh, wow. I thought you were linking to the verse he read on the show that people were up in arms about.

I guess I can't argue that the guy is ignorant, now.

And rap is associated with gangs. So that must mean all people that listen to rap, is in a gang.
No, but plenty of rappers make efforts to associate themselves with gang culture and all its connotations through dress, speech, and lifestyle choices. The DD do the same thing. It'd be fair to say "that rapper is trying to act like a tough gang banger" even if they are not in the same way it would be fair to say "that DD dude is trying to act like a dimwitted redneck" even if maybe he's not.

Again, what I am going on is strictly A) merchandise I've seen in Wal-Mart, B) commercials I've seen for the show and descriptions of it by others, and C) reading the GQ article that started this mess. In the GQ article Phil says plenty of demonstrably false things that suggest, to me, that he's kinda dumb (e.g. that Mitt Romney is from Utah, that black people weren't upset pre-Civil Rights, etc.).

Yeah he is speaking from a narrow minded only what he personally observed stance. So he only experienced a small insulated bubble of the true nature of things that was more evident in urban areas and didnt lok beyond that to see what all was happening apparently.

Right, but stating stuff like that is going to get you labeled as "dumb"? Right? I mean, what a close-minded view of segregation and civil rights to have! The interview has all kinds of markers of low intelligence. He said stuff like "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.." "Morph"? Either he thinks that homosexuality is a "gateway sin" or he thinks it is closely tied to bestiality, womanizing, etc. These ideas are demonstrably false through statistical and scientific/social scientific data. He says that Christianity has no comparable "record of murder" compared to other religions. He thinks Romney is from Salt Lake City. He has no grasp of history or science, and bases all of his views of the past, present, and future of this world on a specific interpretation of scripture.

That makes him a dumb-ass, regardless of what shirt he's wearing or what he does for fun. The problem is that spouting this kind of nonsense is celebrated within more backwards, less-educated pockets of our culture, so he'll get support from fans, a pass from A&E, and won't have to think about readjusting his view of the world and learning some shit.

Well.

You guys finally did it. You duders made me kind of hate myself as I've made "duck dynasty" a hot topic of conversation on a retro game forum.

But alas! You guys chip in on item #80 for the 2013 Charity Auction and I'll express my DD views on the Podcast.

Marketing!
