What does the tribe think of Pantera? I thought there was one of you that disliked them. I listen to Far Beyond Driven today, first time I listened to the whole thing in years. Fucking loved it. Strength Beyond Strength is one of their best songs imo.

Their glam shit is awful.
Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, and The Great Southern Trendkill are decent albums.
Reinventing the Steel is pretty weak and has the worst album art I've ever seen.
Decent band overall, I dig 'em. Wanted to see them live when they came to Maine ages ago, but my mom wouldn't let me go. I was like 12 years old.
Phil Anselmo was in some pretty wild side-projects like Viking Crown and Down.
R.I.P. Dimebag Darrell.

I pretty much agree with this entire post. Except for the Reinventing the Steel part. I like that album. Not as good as Cowboys From Hell or Great Southern Trendkill, sure, but still very good.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Their glam shit is awful.

Re: Metal Heads Assemble!!
I place Vulgar Display of Power on a bit of a pedestal. Not sure if I would say it goes with the top thrash greats, but it's close enough for me to think about it when the question comes up. Dimebag's riffage and leads are insane on this album (really underrated lead player), and the songs in general are fantastic. Mouth for War, A New Level, Walk, Fucking Hostile, Rise, Hollow, such great songs. This album also probably has the best ratio of quality:filler, something that Pantera struggled with a bit.
After that, I really do like Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven. Cemetery Gates is a great song. I just don't think these albums have the explosive power that Vulgar does. Great albums full of merit nonetheless.
Great Southern Trendkill is good, but I've never been able to get into it that much. I do like it, but I rarely feel the desire to go back to it.
Everything else I tend not to care about, listened to once and that's probably it.

This live version of A New Level may be my favorite Pantera song. So sick. Anselmo sounds best when he's stoned out of his mind and not actively trying to "sing."

Vinnie Paul was born in my city.
I've actually ran into a bunch of people around here who claim to have hung out with them way back, or at least claim to have hung out with Vinnie and Dime. They're kinda worshipped over here, and you saw it a LOT in the couple of years after Dime died, so for a while I was really burned out on them.
But, they're good. I like Cowboys probably more than some of the later stuff, but when a song pops on the radio or something I certainly crank it up.

Happy Anniversary to me! My wife knows me.

The Surtur Rising album comes with a rather long live DVD, too!

Yeah, I never have gotten around to watching that DVD...
Between the two, I prefer Twilight of the Thunder Gods, but both are great albums. If you haven't picked up Deceiver of the Gods yet, I suggest you do. It has a track on there, Hel, with Messiah Marcolin singing.
