I had this fairly long post, but I guess I messed up somehow in posting it. Basically what I was going to say is this. Try before you buy. Download games and try them on your modded Saturn. If you find a game you really like, then buy it. Build a collection of both originals AND copies, but let the originals be the games you enjoy the most. This gives you a collection that covers all the notable games(copies), while still having a personal touch(originals)
Whatever you do, don't obsess. Have fun

Still, I can't see paying HOW MUCH for Dragoon Saga? Yup, thats one game I didn't feel the least bit bad about downloading. And I like to own originals, I like to own the case and manual with the box art. But I can't see paying $200 for a used game that was only $50 when it was new.

Re: Copies Vs The Original ?
I can honestly say that I have never played a copy game or used an emulator at this point, I just don't see the appeal.
I like to have the genuine artifact in which to play games. This is just my opinion but when you're playing a legitimate copy on the console which it was meant for the experience is above and beyond anything you will ever get on an emulator.

Re: Copies Vs The Original ?
I agree, I have always said that. There's nothing like owning a SNES cart and playing it on the system. Playing a ROM on an emulator just doesn't feel the same. But since I'm the game addict that I am, I really can't afford to buy every game that I want to play, especially when older games fetch a nasty price. This is the reason I got a mod chip for my Saturn.
And people like to argue with "I like to support the game developers." Yes, me too, this is why I don't download games that you can still buy new. But you're not supporting Sonic Team Software when you buy a used copy of Shining Force 3 for $80.

Yes, exactly. I thought that most people knew this already.Ziggy587 wrote:And people like to argue with "I like to support the game developers." Re: Copies Vs The Original ?
You would think so, wouldn't you? But no.
This isn't exactly the same, but... Just the other day I was arguing with my friend over this. He was playing Shining Force 1 when it came out on VC, so I gave him a CD with an emulator and Shining Force 2 on it. I own a SF2 cart, so I legally own the ROM. Since its legal to lend a game to a friend (or at least, I think it's still legal) there really wasn't any stealing of game going on. He doesn't own a Genesis, and I hate lending out consoles.
But then he downloaded SF2 when it came out on VC and I had to ask why. He threw that 'supporting the developers' crap at me. I mean, I'm sure a small profit will go to Sega, but after all these years and how many hundred of thousands of copies sold, I really don't think they're relying on the profits from this game to pay their salaries.

Re: Copies Vs The Original ?
its true that Sega will have covered those costs/written them off years ago but that means any money they get form the sale is money in the coffers for sega and everyone round here seems to want them to make another console and another 30 add ons for it too...
On the main subject, I do prefer to find the originals but my saturn is chipped which allows me to play stuff before I shell out a load of cash for it. eg i downloaded Radiant Silvergun the other week and while it is pretty cool I'm not sure I would pay out enougth cash to buy a 360 for the privelage of owning the orginal box. I also have the option of copying the rarer games that I own and saving the disks.
If you are interested in collecting but on a udget, there are loads of cool saturn games for a few quid that you could scoop up and line up on the shelf and get yourseld a chip as well so you can sample some of those expensive games as well

Re: Copies Vs The Original ?
Not to mention, these games are over fifteen years old and chances are the only one benefiting from VC sales are the current copyright holders. Developers can change hands so many times over the course of a decade, who knows if the original people who worked on SF2 see a cent.Ziggy587 wrote:But then he downloaded SF2 when it came out on VC and I had to ask why. Re: Copies Vs The Original ?
Like many of you, I have no problem with systems not available in stores. So that would mean right now dreamcast and before I have no problem with burning/emulating. Sure the original versions are the best way to play, but some times multifunctional/simplistic ways to play games are best.
For example I usually take a shuttle pc on vacation with controller adapters with me so I we can play whatever I fancy on one box. Sure I could have brought my NES, SNES, and Genesis and a boatload of games. But one small box with a couple controllers is alot easier to carry.
