AOL announced today that the last version of Winamp will be released next month:

This saddens me greatly since I have used Winamp daily since 2000. Heck it is what I use on my phone.
I guess the llama finally whipped back.
For those of you who have forgot that joke:
Winamp, dead at 16

I feel like WinAmp had its time in the spotlight, but has largely faded in relevance over time.
Personally I prefer foobar2000 nowadays.

Foobar is much better. I use iTunes. Mainly because I use iTunes Match. I guess I could still use Foobar, but I don't mind either.

Winamp could have been the main audio program for computers, but AOL screwed that up. So it faded to relative obscurity. I just liked that it was a small foot print, light resource, mp3 player with a fairly stable queue system. The most I had it load was 55gigs and it played it for several hours before crashing.
My main worry is about the Android app. I hate the alternatives, so if that goes away I am fairly screwed on my phone.

I used Winamp on my PC for years, still do on my Galaxy SIII.
Right up until I got my original ipod, at first I used plugins to mange my musics to it, but it was a pain and often put duplicates of songs. I also had issues with it when my library of songs was large.
In the end I gave up and went to iTunes simply to make it easier to use my ipod and I did not like the idea of using two media players. This was the end of Winamp for me.

I remember downloading TONS of obnoxious skins for WinAmp back in the day.
I still have a version of it on my computer but I pretty much never use it...

I'll echo this. The thing I love about Winamp is that it's light and doesn't have lots of bells and whistles in your face. You can certainly add in a bunch of crazy plugins to do weird things, but if you just want to load up a playlist and go it's great. I always had a sorted music collection anyway, so I don't need advanced playlist management.fastbilly1 wrote:Winamp could have been the main audio program for computers, but AOL screwed that up. I still use Winamp for playing music on my PC.
I should probably adapt to Foobar. Mostly I've stuck with Winamp due to being content navigating files/folders instead of having an integrated library feature.
