Recommendations on a PC gamepad?

You could always use a Dual Shock 3. Though the drivers are pretty patchy :/

Hit up the Thrift Stores and Swap Meets
You can buy maybe five USB PC controllers for the price of a new one. You might even find a PS/2 gamepad which is keyboard ready for keyboard only games. Another bonus is since they are already out of the package you can play with the buttons to see how it feels before the purchase. A chance a used controller might be defective, but a small risk since they are such a good price.

One month update:

After getting a 360, I figured since I had the controller, I might as well try it out on the PC. Picked up a wireless receiver and am now slowly warming to this thing. I do love the fact that for a lot of games, it just works. Still getting used to the stupid d-pad though.

I got a wired 360 controller for my PC. Although I guess a wireless dongle would have been cheaper. Woops.

Besides that I use an arcade stick for doujin shmups.

Eh, the wired version gets rid of the battery hump, and the wireless dongles have reliability issues (fairly easy to fix, but still).

yeah I actually got rid of a wireless/dongle one and replaced it with a wired pad for those reasons.

Eh, not really having any of those issues as of yet. Only thing that sucks is I gotta make sure the 360 is unplugged before I turn the controller on, otherwise it'll wake that up and link to it instead of the PC.

oh yeah, haha. You just reminded me the MAIN reason I got a wired controller. That was so annoying. But now I'm just so used to not dealing with recharging.

As did I. Well, mainly for the charging/syncing thing. The dongle did die on me, but I soldered in wire and it's been fine since then. Just didn't see the point in messing with wireless when my PC is just under the desk.
