It's as if both consoles share the marketing tag line of "It's new".
That's enough for some people (myself included), but that said there's plenty to be excited about for both systems IMO.

This was sorta the same deal when the Ps3/Xb360 launched. To me at least, it seemed like it took a bit for the systems to start having games that looked and felt like something that would've never been possible on the previous generation's hardware.

Most of the big advancements weren't really graphical though, the scope of online integration starting last gen was pretty huge. Sure you had Live on the original Xbox and you had a handful of online games on the Ps2 (and like, one online game on the Gamecube.), but this last gen was when we really saw online stuff take off.

Kinda hard to see where any big "leap" is with this new generation, but maybe it'll become more obvious as time goes on.

You think so? I just about shit my pants when I first saw an NES (vs. what I had seen on Atari) and again when I saw SNES (Mario World vs. Mario 3) and again when I saw the graphics in Super Mario 64. I can't comment on 4th gen to 5th gen or 6th gen to 7th as I wasn't playing games then.

btw I realize that I'll be "proven wrong" eventually, it's just not gonna be at launch.

There is a bunch of technological advancement. We had a bunch of early launch games exist on the ps2 as well from last gen . This is just a bridging period. Here soon there will be games that can't exist on past gen systems without significant changes or sacrifices.

It seems like we're almost plateauing in terms of console technology. While a PS4 is obviously more "advanced" than a PS3 it's not in any way I find tangible or interesting. I remember when a new gen of consoles meant something completely new - there was no way Mario 64 could have existed on the SNES, for example.

I'm sure I'll get a PS4 eventually - but it will be completely contingent on the strength of the game library. The console itself doesn't do anything for me, then again - neither did the PS3.

But to all you launch day guys........... have fun!

To this day I have no interest in a PS3 other than the Console Exclusive games, which so far aren't enough to make me drop coin. Seriously, why drop around $250usd for MGS4? The PS3 was $200usd at Gamestop and I thought "nope. I'd rather purchase a backup PS2 and a ton of great games instead".

But I'll take Super Castlevania IV over Lords of Shadow, Tekken Tag over Tekken 5, NHL 2002 over NHL 2012, Super Mario Bros. 3 over New Super Mario Brothers, and so on...

From not only a gamer aspect but also from a marketing perspective, there is no reason to buy either the xbone of Pffft4 other than to say "Hey You Guyssss! I got it! Look at me!". That or to sell it online to make a profit.

Because there are way more games than that which are console exclusives that you should play.

Uncharted 1-3, Resistance 1-3, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, The Unfinished Swan, Journey, Flower, Flow

That's off the top of my head.

Yeah there is, even if you don't see it. I'm a tech enthusiast and love seeing/playing with this stuff at launch. I like to see how they push the tech in new and interesting ways, it's not a status symbol, who gives a crap about that.

You don't buy them for just the games now. You buy them to play now and also for all the games down the line. There are a bunch more good games beyond mgs4 on the PS3.

I'm not some people.

That's not a diss or me being arrogant. "This is new" is never a reason for me to open my wallet.

I for one AM getting the PS4 so I can use it as a status symbol. I am going to take a picture of myself playing it and then emblazon it on t-shirts and hats, to wear regularly.

Truth be told, the main reason WHY I am getting the Xbox One as well is because I'm fairly insecure about my status amongst the gaming community and my personal friends. Hopefully when they see my shiny but redundant new tech they'll respect my opinion about video games much more.
