You are missing the point. The US government is your Mom and Dad.

Free countries don't keep stock piling taxes to get rid of their mistakes that led to our deficit. The government doesn't give a shit about your health, they care about mandated health care to open your wallet.

Taxes.

B.S.!

As an American, if I choose to be a fat man, I should have the right to be a fat man!
That article is the real bulls#!t. Removing trans fats won't change flavor, at all. Saturated fat will still get the job done.

New York outlawed selling softdrinks more than 16oz at restaurants earlier this year.

Which was repealed.

I have no issues of people making bad decisions and dying because of them. We're educated enough to know that smoking is not good for your health nor is drinking gallons of soda a day.

The U.S. Government is not telling you what you can and cannot eat. Rather, the Food & Drug Administration ("FDA") has decided - based upon significant scientific evidence - that artificial trans-fats, like arsenic, bleach, and lead, are "not for human consumption". Like arsenic, bleach, and lead, however, you are free to ingest as much of it as you would like. Likewise, you are still free to purchase and sell artificial trans-fat. The only requirement is that you label any foods containing them as "not for human consumption." This label will educate anyone who purchases these foods that they contain something that the FDA has concluded is "not for human consumption", and the label serves to eliminate any information assymetry between the buyer of the food product and the seller. (Informational assymetry prevents the functioning of free markets, and minimizing informational assymetry is a government function recognized by even the most strident libertarians.) Given the labeling requirement, however, and based on a justified fear of liability, it is understandable that most food manufacturers will probably refrain from placing artificial trans-fats in their products any longer. (I am certain, however, that artificial trans-fats will remain in food products sold in less regulated markets - such as China, central America, and Somalia - so you can always import them if you find that natural saturated fats just aren't cutting it.)

Actually, I feel like we aren't educated enough to know those things.

No, the information is there and presented to us. It's just that we have to be willing to seek it out.

Right, I think that's what I'm trying to say. Being educated is an effort on the part of the learner, and the goal of our education system is to present information AND engage the students so that they take in the presented information and become educated.

You know, it's funny. You know when you hear about something before things were FDA regulated? Like how you could basically bottle anything from rat piss to the runoff from a industrial plant and claim it does anything from regrow hair to losing weight. Or those funky medical gizmos that claim to do amazing things but basically do nothing. We look at this things and laugh at the way things use to be 100 years ago. I wonder if 100 years from now, if people then will look at not only our diets today but the horrible things that are allowed in our foods and laugh at how ridiculous things use to be.

That's of course assuming there's a better world 100 years in the future and not a worse one.

That's unimportant, Ziggy. What is important is that I've got this great bottle of snake oil that'll cure your arthritis, hair loss, rickets, rheumatism, and the every day common cold while also serving as a solid nutritional supplement to firm the muscles while keeping the skin soft and supple.

Yours for only $99.99!

No no no you're doing it wrong. You can't claim to cure specific ailments, you're supposed to make vague, generic claims like how it'll "give you energy" and "balance your immune system". Then you gotta claim in small print that your product isn't intended to treat or cure any disease.

That's how you skirt regulations.
