I do. I just don't think that anime characters have real problems.
Do Holden Caulfield, Randle McMurphy, or Victor Mancini not have "real" problems?

I'm not saying that the story, or the characters, in Evangelion even hold a candle to the aforementioned novels, but if you're just going to dismiss the idea of considering the plight of characters under the pretense that they're fictional, endeavoring to follow a story is meaningless.

Anything that legitimately attempts to tell a story deserves to be scrutinized beyond its face value.

I realize you may be feeling attacked a bit (this being the internet and all) and I'm sure my sarcasm doesn't help that, but I feel you're not being challenged enough in your thought, given some of those recent posts. That's concerning to me, considering your age. Empathizing may be a different story, but attempting to sympathize with, or understand a fictional character is not beside the point.

So, you just want him to be an emotionless male that tries to sex up every female he gets the chance to? You do realize that SO many anime already do this, and you could get your fill of it anywhere. Eva actually offers something unique that you can't find elsewhere. If you are a fan of anime, you should really try to sit down with this one, perhaps with less expectations, and just take in what it offers.

Anyways, started watching Madoka Magica. I didn't expect to like it too much, but it was recommended... and I'll be dammed if I'm not hooked on the show. Had to stop after episode 4, but will be finishing that up shortly.
I watched some and didn't like it.

I usually drop a show after one or two episodes if I don't like it, regardless of reputation. I thought Madoka Magica was entertaining in the beginning, but that's all it was. My opinion changed later of course  Because it's not really an episodic show. If you don't watch everything, you miss out on everything. How much of it did you see?

Yea. Madoka is one of my all time favorites. Watched it at least 6 times now. Got tickets to both showing of the new movie in my area.

I usually give a series at least 5 episodes to pique my interest. If I haven't found something interesting about it by then it'll get dropped. But that's a rarity. I think I can count the number I've dropped on one hand. But then, I might be a bit more forgiving than most when it comes to my entertainment choices.

Watched a few more episodes of this last night with the gf. Every episode bumps this anime higher and higher on my list of favorites. Seriously, can't believe how damn good this show is.

I'm sad that we only have 5 episodes left to watch.

My girlfriend keeps trying to push me into watching Madoka. All I really know going in is that it subverts your expectations and apparently gets quite dark.

I'll probably get to it eventually.

Not that my expectations of the show were high, since I hadn't heard much other than, "You should watch this", but it really blew me away. It was nothing like what I expected.

Plus, I would be pleased for my gf to push me to watch ANY anime! You must be spoiled if this is a common enough occurance that you haven't sat down to watch some Madoka with her :P

The first two episodes are a trap. It doesn't start until episode 3.

But yeah, it is quite good, which says a lot from me because it is not my genre at all. It packs quite a punch. I was surprised by how ambitious and striking the visuals were. I could probably be talked into watching the movies.
