Games Beaten 2013

Yeah, Super EDF! I might need to try that again sometime.

Games Beaten 2013
1. Bioshock Infinite [PC]
2. Demon's Crest [SNES]
3. Sacred Citadel [PC]
4. Dishonored [PC]
5. Bastion [PC]
6. Torchlight 2 [PC]
7. TMNT: Turtles in Time [SNES]
8. Mark of the Ninja [PC]
9. Mega Man X [SNES] *NEW*
10. Mega Man X2 [SNES] *NEW*
Had a friend of mine over yesterday, and our goal was to beat all three X games in a day. Sadly, we got a late start, took breaks, and got hung up trying to get certain upgrades so we weren't able to best all three. However, we did manage to get through the first two. Our combined knowledge of both games is pretty impressive at this point, as this is easily our 5 or 6th time through the games, so we're hoping to be able to get our time down and eventually beat X3 as well for the full experience.

Haven't updated my list in what seems like weeks.
Splatterhouse on the 360 reminds me of Duke Nukem Forever; I got what I expected and was happy with it. It's a comical violence ridden button masher with some great surprises.
Finished the trilogy with little frustration.
Replayed Doomsday Warrior because Ack said it was beatable. Turns out he's right. I don't have anything to add to his review.
Went on a Crash course not too long ago. Cortex was a lot of fun, but I enjoyed the racers more. CRT in particular remains one of my favorite Crash games made.
NHL 2002 is my favorite hockey game ever made, and I'll play plenty more 82 game seasons.

I've had this game in my collection for over 10 years, and never fully played through it. This was a pretty interesting puzzle/strategy game. Got all 30 pieces and blasted off back for home, the final trial was tough though, and kept kicking my butt. It's like the same for me in Starcraft games, if there's a lot to manage it's hard for me to multitask. Surprisingly though, this game was just the right length--you can get through it in a weekend. The puzzles are interesting and offer a good challenge, and it's cute too! The only gripes I have are keeping your Pikmin managed is like herding cats, they'll drown themselves if you're not good at managing the crowd. There were plenty of times my Pimin ran themselves right into a quick death.

Yeah, Doomsday Warrior is definitely beatable. It's just not very good. I didn't know you had played it before, Luke.
Anyway, over the weekend I beat a couple more games.
Kendo Rage I've had for several years now, and I've always had an interesting relationship with it. I find the controls a bit stiff, and the timeline I'm not entirely sure of(I think I have to be at school before 10am? The game said I had about six hours, and it starts at 4am. I made it at 7:59am), but I love the visuals and the quirkiness of it. I used to attempt runthroughs of it regularly back in grad school, but I could never beat the final boss rush level. So I set it on the back burner and finally returned to it years later. And what do you know, I finally beat it!
Kendo Rage is not an easy game at times. The boss fights are all beatable without taking damage...at least, I think they are. There are a few that I still took hits on in their advanced versions in the final level. And while bosses have specific moves, certain ones do not stick to a pattern, like the Toyminator. But each boss is beatable, and if you grab yellow balls from the ballkeeper, you can use those as a shield to block hits. In general that's what I go for, and I used the blue weapon throughout. The final boss also isn't that challenging in his first two forms, but his third one made me eat my words. I didn't figure it out, I just beat him to death and hoped my extra lives would hold out. The game is very forgiving in that you will simply continue on with one less life from the exact point you die at.
So I'm glad to finally finish something I started back in 2009 while in grad school.
As for Imperium, I love a good Gundam game. Having just beaten a couple of SHMUPS in recent weeks, I guess I felt a bit cocky and sat down with this one. I've learned a fair bit about weapon choice, boss memorization, and spotting incoming projectiles now, because these are skills you have to have to beat this game. The bosses are massive and impressive, even if they're not particularly challenging once you've figured out their patterns. In fact, the only real trouble with them is that they have so much health. I felt the levels were harder than the bosses, especially those mechs with the seeking lasers in the final level! I got used to switching to a weapon I don't care for to take a hit instead of giving up my two most-coveted choices: giant green lasers and giant orange waves. Those two weapons got me through most of the game.
The real trick with Imperium seems to be finding your preferred flight speed(I prefer 3/4) and not losing your chosen weapon. Also, switch weapons when you know you're about to get hit, and use the bombs to avoid large groups of projectiles and enemies, but don't use them on bosses. This way you can avoid suddenly dropping into another section of their attack pattern that you weren't prepared for. Also, the green lasers can cause slowdown, which helps!

TEKKEN 2
Hadn't played this one in years but recently got a good deal on a PS2 so I whacked it in and unlocked all the characters and alternate menu screen which I consider beaten. Man, do I love Tekken 2, definitely my favourite 3D fighter from that gen (sorry virtua fighter 2). Playing it again was just a nostalgia overload, the angular characters, the pumping 90's house music, the digitized backgrounds. Lovely stuff. Shame the COM is so ten hit combo happy. Bastards. And Law will always be banned in the Sload household.
Castle of Illusion (Xbox360)
Got this half price, sort of, and have to say I really enjoyed it. I think this is much more a remake than remaster as it slaps in a fair few 3D segments that weren't in the mega drive game. Grant Kirkhope's remixed soundtrack is excellent as well, makes the game feel like a lost N64 gem. My only issues are it's a bit too short and easy, and the controls go a bit south when you have to jump into the back/foreground for certain bosses. If you have kids or any affection for the original I would snap it up. Looks nice as well.

Got the Platinum!
From mostly loathing a lot of moments of the first game, to loving this one enough to go for the Platinum trophy (mostly consisted of dabbing into challenge mode to buy the expensive stuff). Yeah, this game fixed literally -everything-. Amazing levels, characters and villains were a huge improvement, and it was awesome.
Dabbed into the third and yeah, not sure what to think so far. Suddenly the levels feel more linear and the games seem to get increasingly crazy with the onslaught of minigames and other weirder elements. The story is starting to get a bit bigger in scope too?... Even though it's good to see more Quark. But yeah I'll keep chugging along, still very fun compared to the first game.
I'll get back to the Sly trilogy after this and I fear that Jak might not leave much of impression after these two haha, who knows though.

Re: Games Beaten 2013

Very short. Beat it in an hour or two. But also pretty dang fun. Definetly worth the $5 I picked it up for.
I didn't use the Crossbow accessory, though, just the regular Wii Mote and Nunchuk.

So my wife comes into the gameroom, goes to the pile of horror games I made for the month and says "what do we got?" She decides on Deathsmiles. She's never played a shmup, never mind a bullet hell. She swears she went through 12 continues, but I think it was less. I used 3 which is 2 more than Deathsmiles normally takes me, but I was kind of guarding her the whole time. But bottomline - she said it was a lot of fun! She wants to play again and see if she can cut down the number of continues.
Success.
