20. Vanquish(360) 9/6/13
21. Quantum Theory(360) 9/8/13

Quantum Theory was interesting to say the least. Was a very generic 3rd person shooter with a pretty crazy story. The game had a huge flaw though the aiming was very poorly done there was no reticule unless you aimed the gun which caused you to almost stand still. Plus without auto lock on it was nearly impossible to hit a moving target.

The companion system was pretty cool though with the ability to toss your partner across the map to perform a melee kill and perform combination melee attacks if you could get the timing down.

Overall I would give it a 4/10. Definitely a title which could have used some more work just functional enough to be enjoyable but with pretty constant annoying flaw.

Dude you deserve a medal for beating that game. I played the demo... it definitely felt like potential top 10 WORST of this gen hands down. Controls, graphics, absolutely everything was crazy bad.

The story actually got a quite a bit better towards the end and there were a few good boss fights.

Although I do have to say the game play itself was generic as hell basically enter a room fight a few waves of enemies move to the next room rinse and repeat.

The aiming system is what killed the game though. It took a lot of getting used and hopefully my overall skill has improved thanks to the precision I had to pick up in order to survive :P. However it was by far the worst aim system I have ever seen in a third person shooter. With a mouse & keyboard it might have been better but with thumb sticks it was insane.

Also played it through because I figured I would be one of the few players who did lol. Most people would have stopped 2-3 levels in.

65. Rogue Legacy (PC)(Roguelike Platformer)
66. Doomsday Warrior (SNES)(Fighting)

Rogue Legacy is awesome! It's a metroidvania-style platformer with a randomized dungeon in which you play a series of individuals trying to defeat the evil lord of a castle. The kicker is, each time you die, you pick from one of three descendents and continue the fight as a new generation. Each character will have a different class or magic attack, but they also suffer from generational issues: one character may have an eidetic memory to enable them to remember enemy locations in a room, while another may have dyslexia, or be bald, or suffer from alzheimers, or irritable bowel syndrome. Not all the effects are negative even if they might seem so, such as being OCD (causes you to gain mana by destroying things). After death, each new generation takes the money earned in the previous run and uses it to purchase upgrades for the family mansion or new equipment. And then it's off to try again, with Charon taking all of your cash to enter the dungeon for a new run.

And while the game is initially challenging, it becomes steadily easier. To make up for this, each time you beat the game unlocks a new New Game+, which replaces enemy types with the next tier (of which there are 3), and increases their level to give them more health and higher damage. I'm currently on the New Game+3, so enemies are all top tier and very high level, making it easier for me to just rush through to the bosses as opposed to actually fighting my way through each section of the dungeon. It's also worth more money to kill bosses anyway.

Doomsday Warrior I beat some time ago but never added to the list because I forgot about it. And I forgot about it because I didn't think the game was very good. As a fan of fighting games, I dislike its controls, but I particularly dislike its leveling system: the amount of points you gain is based entirely on the amount of health you have after each round, so the worse you do in a round, the worse you do overall. I dislike this system because it serves as a very rigid learning curve for new players. And once you beat an opponent, you cannot fight them again, meaning if you repeatedly screw up, you'll have to fight the final boss with pathetic stats. In my opinion, the game Power Moves handled skill progression much better on the SNES (though it's not a great game either).

Now there are some things I do like about Doomsday Warrior: it captures some of that post-apocalyptic feel of series like Fist of the North Star or Mad Max. And the throws are spectacular in their visual design. Enemy designs are also varied, with the exception of two characters who serve the generic Ryu/Ken role. That said, I wouldn't recommend this game except to those SNES fighter fans who have already exhausted a large list of other fighters on the console but who don't want to sink to the likes of Street Combat, Pit-Fighter, or Ultraman.

67. Ultimate Fighter (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)
68. Captain America and the Avengers (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)
69. Jeopardy! Deluxe Edition (SNES)(Game Show Simulator)

I dislike double posting, but it's been several days, so I figured I might as well. I've beaten three games in the meantime.

Ultimate Fighter is a Western localized version of a Hiryu no Ken game. It's got some issues(the plot makes little sense, there are some cheap segments, and controls weren't responsive), but the amount of content really helps to make up for this: there's the Story mode, a Beat 'Em Up which includes numerous boss fights in a pseudo-fighting game style, along with an actual fighting game mode which lets players pick from any of the main characters and bosses. Unfortunately the controls are limited to the Beat 'Em Up's punch/kick/jump standard, but there are some interesting moves hidden in there. And I really liked the animation, particularly when knocking people out of bounds in several fights which involve an MMA ring. The series has unfortunately been butchered in its various appearances over here, and I'd rather point people to Flying Dragon on the Nintendo 64, but if you've exhausted all the good fighters and beat 'em ups, this title might interest you solely for the series it comes from.

Captain America & The Avengers, on the other hand...I love the property. I love the characters and cameos, I love the mix of beat 'em up and hori shmup in the various levels, I really love the limited voicework, especially 'AMERICA STILL NEEDS YOUR HELP' between each level, and the comic panels are an excellent touch. Unfortunately the enemies are cheap, and the game is brutally hard as a result. I developed some interesting tactics based on the four lead characters and their respective strengths, but I really don't want to recommend this game to anyone. I've heard that the Genesis version beats the SNES version in several categories (more voicework, better colors, more lives), though I don't know if it helps to lessen the challenge or how deep the differences go.

And then there is Jeopardy! Deluxe Edition. Well, it's Jeopardy, though the answering is all done through text, which hinders the experience since a single missed letter (accidentally putting a 'B' instead of an 'A' for instance) will screw you up. And with words that get strange with punctuation (such as the Tam o' Shanter hat), things can be interesting. As far as game show-based video games are concerned, I prefer this one to Wheel of Fortune, though it's not a very high bar. Gotta love that classic Jeopardy! theme though.

Wonder if ds will see this.

Continuing my DMC marathon this year, finally got around to replaying DMC4 which I haven't played since it was new. Played the heck of it back then, beat all the difficulties, cleared the Bloody Palace, etc. Good fun. It was actually a pretty random buy/play for me, I can't even remember how I got around to it. But I went in pretty much knowing nothing and I'd say it was one of the best blind plays ever for me.

Now that I've rightfully played the entire series in order though, I think I can finally order them. First and foremost... DMC4 is still awesome, but coming out of DMC1 and DMC3, it's clear as day that it sacrificed a lot for some bad stuff. bruno also corrected me recently in some talk about the series that Kamiya actually only had involvement with the first game, some other guy did DMC2-DMC4. Now this is odd, because DMC4 reminded me of practically everything you see in Bayonetta (which I'm not a fan of), which Kamiya was heavily involved with. Did DMC4 influence him...too much? Perhaps.

Way too many cutscenes and the story is awful. Cutscene skipping bad. Still kind of fun-bad at times, but now that I've seen the other games, these characters are just terrible (the scientist/bug guy, the main villain, etc). I also hate when sequels take the scope of the plot up 1,000 notches, suddenly this Pope is taking over the world and cities are in chaos, etc. That would have happened in the other games, but the story was isolated between Dante and his foes. The whole world wasn't involved quite yet and it wasn't that over the top and too much. Trish was also annoying, her voice sucked, not sure what it was but yikes. Came off as a bad Ada Wong to me. Iit would have been cooler to see Lady more involved here.

The best parts are obviously with Dante, but his involvement in the whole story is sidelined too much by Nero. He's obviously the main, but still you're playing as Dante through half the game, so it's just weird how they handled it.

I didn't care about the backtracking, but fighting the bosses multiple times this time around got old pretty quick. First as Nero, then Dante, then again as Nero for the boss rush at the end. And there's only a few bosses, that aren't nearly as fun as the ones in DMC3.

That's basically it... I can forgive the terribleness to the story, but it's obvious that it's so bloated they probably could have put a lot more time into more levels/bosses and such instead.

I think I'd rate them like this:

DMC1 - 10
DMC2 - 5
DMC3 - 10
DMC4 - 7

Really can't decide between 1 and 3. If I try and can platinum 1 though, maybe I'll have a better opinion by then. I like the atmosphere and tone to that one the most, topped off with the music, and everything, but DMC3 has perfected gameplay and Vergil was a huge highlight. Best action games ever.

Yup, I see it. You are probably marginally more generous to DMC4 than I am, but I haven't played it in a long time. I'd probably rank them more like

1 - 9
2 - 5
3 - 10
4 - 6
DMC - 8

those are relative to one another, not to all games (e.g. DMC4 might reasonably be a 7.5 or 8/10 as a "review score", but not compared to other DMC games)

So, obviously, you now need to play the new one.

I spent most of the game spooked because a giant, creaky, empty house during a thunderstorm freaks me out. But really it's a well-written story about coming of age and family relationships told through notes, invoices, letters and pamphlets from the year while your character was abroad.

And that's all I'm going to say. It only took me about 2 hours to get through and I really enjoyed it.
