Trying to play Fallout 3

Post by arion »

This has to be the most infuriating game installation i have ever gone through.

At first i just installed it and no problems but when i tried to launch it i just get some strange errors.

If you have any iso mounting software you need to download a patch from Securerom.
I tried to get past that only to find that i need to have Games for Windows installed.
And to install that i need service pack 2.

So i have to go and add a lot of unnecessary updates just so i can play that game. And i am seriously reconsidering actually going through with this just to play Fallout 3 and the reason is I really really hate Service Pack 2 for Xp.

But im sure im about the only one here still running xp without any recent updates so im problaby in a minority here :D

This is the kinda shit that makes wonder if pc gaming is worth the trouble. I mean I play games on the pc( and just finished a major upgrade on my system) so I'm not purely a console gamer making out that consoles are superior. But it's stuff like this that just bugs me.

I've never had a console tell me I couldn't play a game that I just bought till I dl a shit load of updates I don't want.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Well i gave in but fortunately i found a way to disable the Security Center witch is my main annoyance with sp2. But despite that programs like "games for windows" should be optional not a requirement to play games.

Well if it infuriates you that much you could get it for 360 or PS3

Have you tried pirating it? Those usually work better than the DRM encrusted retail versions.

SP3 is out for XP... sorry but base XP sucks. I just can't fathom why someone would want to leave the amount of security loopholes that are in there, its very similar to the initial problems with Vista. Anyway, just be grateful you don't have to install the .net framework... now there is something to complain about. Oh and today's consoles do make you update before you can play games... the prime example that I am familiar with is Super Mario Galaxy.

I managed to dodge all of those bullets, since I'm on Vista, and I already had the Games for Windows installed from Gears of War. So for me it was the painless style of PC install, just boot up Castlevania while the data is transferred from the disc.
