PS1 questions - hookups, controller, mod chips

Post by Navin_Johnson »

A local thrift store has several ps1 consoles for $5 each. Just the consoles, no cables or cords, no controller. I completely missed the ps1 since I was at college and into pc gaming more then. So, I have a couple questions:

1. Do the PS2 hookups (AV, esp. s-vid; and power) work on the ps1? From what I've read I think they do.
2. Do ps2 dual shock controllers work on the ps1? I can't figure this one out from what I've read.
3. Are ps1 mod chips still readily available and fairly cheap?

thanks.

1. Yes, the AV/power hookups are the same.
2. No, the PS2 dual-shock is not compatible. You need to get a PS1 controller.
3. No idea.

1.As long as you ain't trying to use component
2.Dual shock 2 controllers are backward compatible. Only the pressure sensitvity doesn't work obviously.
3.No unfortunatly.But it's worth a look. If you have no luck,Then emulate.

There's a guy on the underground-gamer forums who's been selling PS1 mod chips for really cheap. They are just standard PIC chips, anyone with a little discrete electronics experience can make one easily. I missed out on the PSX too, and got one of his chips and have been having a blast. Einhander is really awesome. PM me and I'll see if I can hook you up.

When you say ps1, do you mean original or small redesign or both? If it's for the small then that sounds hugely interesting to me.

I've always used a ps2 dualshock pad on my PS1. It works.

I confirm this works on both the PS1 and the PSOne.
