Limited Edition variants

Post by Spyke »

Hi all.

In the past, when buying a game I've always gone for the plain old vanilla flavoured version. No Special Edition this or Limited Edition that. Until now.

I've just ordered my first ever Limited Edition game product and I'm quite excited about it.

It's the Dodonpachi Saidaioujou Limited Edition package, which comes with the following:

-B5 Size BOX Packaging
-Steelbook Case
-Basiscape DoDonPachi Saidaioujou 360 Arrange Soundtrack CD
-B6 Size DoDonPachi Saidaioujou artbook (80Pgs)

I only bought it in Limited Edition format because there are strong rumours that Cave may not be producing any more games for home consoles and as I do like the Cave range (even though I'm not particularly good at a lot of them) I thought I'd show my appreciation.

Plus the extra goodies do look cool, and playing Japanese shooters of late has got me interested in the design, presentation and art in these games.

I'd love to see any other Ltd Ed items that you've bought. Do you buy them habitually, for investment value, or for appreciation of the extra items included or kudos associated with them?

Ant :)

Is there a difference between a limited edition and a collector's edition? I only own a handful of collector's edition games. Ni No Kuni Wizard's edition, The Fire Emblem Awakening edition of Nintendo 3DSXL, Persona 3 Portable Collector's edition, Rayman Origins collector's edition, Resident Evil 4 Steelcase on PS2, Bioshock steelcase on Xbox 360, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (PS2), Raging Blast (Xbox 360) and Ultimate Tenkaichi (Xbox 360). There might be a couple of more I own for the PS2 that I've forgotten about, but that's about it. Ni No Kuni and Rayman are the only ones I personally preordered because of how impressed I was by their trailers.

Nice group shot there! I think Collector's editions and Limited editions are similar, aren't they?

I forgot - I actually bought the Collector's Edition of Baldur's Gate II a long time ago, but don't have it anymore.

There isn't a difference between Limited and Collectors Edition of games. It all depends what the publishers use for marketing purposes. Sometimes you'll see other words used like Legendary Edition but its only for SKU differentiation.

As for what I own: a lot! Like a freaking lot of these things. I mostly own these editions for the Xbox 360 though. I buy not for value but for the knick knacks like statues, art books, or anything else. I always go for the highest SKU available but I never fell into the trap of buying a game because of what it comes with: just to buy it for fun if you get where I'm going with this. I buy a games because its what I like and if it comes with a limited edition SKU I'll get it.

It is rare but some SKUs came with limited numbering. The most recent is Terraria for consoles. I happen to have # 13349 of 30000 for the Xbox 360.

Did you know there's an even bigger, super limited edition of that game?
I'm on the fence about getting it. I already have the one you have, but I am thinking about picking up the super duper limited edition because it has come down in price a lot in Japan (about $50 to $60 or so).

Holy shit hashiriya1. Do you have links where to buy that? I've thought about getting into Cave shooters on modern consoles.

Oh yeah, I also have the Resident Evil Darkside or Umberella Chronicles (I forget which) gun bundle and the Goldeneye golden classic controller bundle for the Wii.

I never knew there was a collector's edition of BG2.

Amazon Japan is still kind of pricey for the super limited edition (about $100). I have been seeing them a bit cheaper in the wild and on yahoo auctions.

My favorite LIMITED EDITION is Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 (the sequel to SNK's infamous "witch touching" game)

JUST LOOK AT ALL THAT COOL JUNK! A fancy box, the game, a two-piece phone charm, a notebook, two petite Nendoroid figures, and a CD with an audio-drama!
(I also have the first game in the picture, which wasn't included but WHATEVS.) I guess Play-Asia was clearing out their stock a while ago because I remember getting this for cheap (like $20-30). Unfortunately I haven't made a serious attempt to really PLAY the games because visual novels + limited Japanese knowledge = not that much fun. But someday I probably will for bragging rights?

But I have a bunch of limited edition things: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Otomedius Excellent, Fallout 3, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Seven, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, and Sakura Wars: So Long My Love (ordered from NISA which came with an exclusive art book).
And then there are things that were only released as a limited edition originally, so I have Deathsmiles, King of Fighters XIII, The Dark Spire, Knights in the Nightmare, and Project X Zone with EXTRA GOODIES. I also have some games which came with special controllers bundled, like some versions of DDR and Beatmania.

I GOT A LOT OF JUNK. But honestly, with most games I just want the game. And if there's a soundtrack with the first pressing, that's awesome. But I have enough BULKY EXTRA STUFF.

KOF XIII, The Dark Spire and Knights in the Nightmare are limited edition? Didn't know that, I used to have KOF and I have DS and Knights.
