PS3 controller problem

So I recently took apart my PS3 to clean it and i'm fairly sure I hooked all the wires back up right but idk..

I was going through my stack of games I need to test, tested the PS1's fine but when I came to my PS2 games my controller wouldn't sync. I have that wireless rechargable one...idk what it's called, got it when I got the PS3. It's an official one and it's never had any problems before.

I start the game and the controller flashes the 4 red lights, then on screen it says press the PS button...I do and nothing happens. I'v tried unplugging it from the console, plugging into a new port, resetting it...I even tried a PS3 game to make sure it's not just the controller but it works for PS1 and PS3 games, and works fine in the start up menu. And just to make sure it's not just that one game I tried two other PS2 games and both were the same.

I'm not sure whats wrong...is it possible I messed something up in the PS3 when I was taking it apart? Or what?

Uh...yeah that's what I have hooked up. It's connected by a usb cable...and it's not syncing.

I dug around and found out it's this controller:

Connected by a USB cable as I said above.

It's always connected to the PS3 that way because I never liked the "battery life" for the controller if it was unplugged.

I can't find anything like my issue online..it's all reset/resync your controller, use the cable...well I use the cable all the time so I don't see how that would help me. And if I unplug it, it just flashes the red lights at me and gives up.

maybe the built in battery is finally dead?

PS3 Controlers batteries may finally be dying after some years now.

Id say give it up and get a new one.

I had a similar problem using a PC USB controller on my PS3. For some reason, the PS3 requires you to re-authenticate your controller when playing PS2 games, but not PS1 or PS3 games.

When you said "It works in the startup menu," did you mean the controller or the PS button specifically? Maybe you just have a problem with the PS button on your controller? Try a different one and see what happens.

Nuuuuu! Damn it..I'm short on cash right now. Besides I don't think that's it really. The controller works fine otherwise, it's just PS2 games that's fucking it over.

The PS button. You know when you start the PS3 up it makes you hit the PS button to sync it? Well that works, so it's not the controller or the PS button as far as I can tell. And I don't have another one to test...I'd have to buy one.

Try clearing the address from the controller and re-syncing.

Get something like a toothpick or tweezers, and click the reset switch on the back of the controller, it's the recessed black button under the surface.

Turn the PS3 on using the power button. Plug the controller in through USB to the PS3, then hold the PS button.

If it works on the menu, then the controller (and console) are fine. If it doesn't work in PS2 mode, it could require re-syncing. Which just required the controller be connected through USB and pressing the PS button.

If it's just not working ... I would check on a PC using DS3 Tool. The battery might be fine. If it is the battery, just replace it. You don't have to buy a whole new controller, Sony sells replacement DS3 batteries and the PS3 manual even shows you how to swap them out.

I'v done all of that all ready, it's not working. I'v reset it about ten times, both plugged and unplugged to the PS3. I'v tried resetting it when i'm "playing" a PS2 game. I unplugged it, turned on the PS3, reset it, plugged it back in, loaded up the PS2 game and it's still not syncing when I "play" a PS2 game. It syncs in the start up menu only.

I pop in the PS2 game it loads it up, the controller starts flashing and the pop up message says Press the PS button. I keep pressing it and pressing it but nothing happens.

Some googling turned up other people with the same issue but no answers. Very odd, I'll hook my Ps3 back up and see if I can come up with anything.
