I lean heavily towards subs, though I have been giving more recent dubs a chance lately. At the very least, I've been comparing them myself instead of just going by other's say-so. I think, for the most part, dubs have improved quite a bit over the last couple years. They're still not consistent enough quality-wise, but they are better.

That was pretty much my first real exposure to it too, and while there are several shows from then that hold up well (Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star), there are other dubs that, going back, literally make me cringe (I'm looking at you, Sailor Moon.)
Since it was brought up and I'm thinking about it now, there are some dubs that I think are quite good or actually prefer to the original:
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
FullMetal Alchemist/Brotherhood
Akira
Ghost in the Shell - I think the movies and the series had a pretty decent dub, actually.
Hellsing Ultimate - This may be more a preference to hearing English voices when the vast majority of the characters are in England.
RIN
Le Chevalier D'Eon - Again, this may be that it may be easier for me to hear people in France speaking English than Japanese.
Ghibli Movies - I'm going to guess that since these are released by Disney that they put a little extra time/money into creating a proper dub.
Dubs to avoid (these are only the one's I feel I've watched trough enough to really compare):
Mai(My)-HiME/Otome - Poor delivery, and poor casting choices in my opinion. Though I will give them brownie points for solving Shizuru's accent dilemma by giving her a southern-bell accent. It still sounds horribly wrong for her, but I'll give them the point for at least trying.
Sailor Moon - If I have to hear one more word of horrible 90's slang imma beat a moon princess. Add to that that voices don't match characters, genders wound up changed, surnames were changed, inconsistent attack names, and the one instance of insulting an entire culture and you have just touched upon the tip of the iceberg.
