Mario Kart Wii probably sold way more, because the Wii sold way more than any previous Nintendo console (bar the handhelds)....just saying

They look similar since they are in the same series, but they have a sizable difference in graphics:

Yeah there is a good difference between New Super Mario Wii and New Super Mario Wii U in graphical terms. NSMBU looks really fantastic in its HD glory. But in terms on tiny screen shots...yeah it looks like the same game. That is actually a big problem, the first Mario game they released should of stuck out more as a new experience.

@emwearz

I am not saying the numbers are not real , I just have second thoughts about them as in I need more convincing. If that many people enjoyed Mario Kart why did they not get the GameCube version, we are not talking about 4-5m in difference here. I think it will all be revealed once Kart for the Wii U is released and if people are really into that series(they are but not a whopping 34m!!) , let us see them pickup the Wii U for it.

@ZeroAX

I see where you are going there , but selling more Wii's does not necessarily mean parallel increase in Kart sales. For Example Halo 2 sold 9m , and while the 360 sold 2.6x the original Xbox , we do not see Halo 3 selling 23m, It sold 12m ( Just about 30% more) . On the opposite , the Wii sold 5x the gamecube so did the Mario Kart series sold 5x more than the gamecube title. You see why I have some sort of doubts about them. Some one here mentioned that it was a bundled title...

@Fastbilly @Kdub

You have to think "average consumer" here again. Sure to you who looks into details and try to appreciate every aspect of the game you see a lot of difference, but for the average Joe he will look at both and think its the same game. Maybe they should have given the games a different theme like Galaxy had a black-night theme with stars all over , and the platforms was circular planets .

To be fair, graphics are getting harder to differentiate. It applies to the ps4/X1 too , while next gen obviously better, you really have to look into the details. Its not like 64->Gamecube kind of thing. Thats why I am speculating that next-gen FPS will not generate more sales because they are doing the same mistake Nintendo is doing (in my opinion) , which is release basically the same game over and over again like COD 4->7 ? I can't differentiate between the 360 Halos , and multiple Forzas . You really have to give a good reason to make the jump and get people excited again with stuff like new IPs or new gameplay like The Last of US or Little Big World. You can offer it as a service too like VC, PSN, or capabilities like online gameplay and Bluray player.

Given that most of the stuff have been done this generation, not sure what is going to get people excited for next gen. other than new IPs. Thats where Nintendo should be going with the Wii U

Hopefully, 3D World's look will fix that. While I've enjoyed the throwback-styled NSMB games, I'm perfectly okay with letting that series die.

Blunder of the Century.

If you think this is bad you should see the European sales, 10k shipped in 3 months.

By your reasoning, games like Madden and PES should not ever sell to the average consumer.

All that graph shows me is that U sales should boost dramatically come Oct/Nov.

Indeed. The graph is remarkably consistent across all the hardware: a decent amount at launch, followed by a massive draught, followed by a huge boost the following holiday season now that some games are out.

Yeah but the sales are still the lowest among all those consoles, and the spike at the end might not be as great for the Wii U as it was for the Wii or the N64, but instead get to gamecube levels at best :(.

I hope the end of the year barrage of games help the Wii U a lot. If only Mario Kart 8 was ready this year :/.

And yeah 10.000 shipped in a region with 700 million people is abysmal
