I don't know what the solution to all this could be, but it still bothers me.

I've wanted to sell my stuff as well, but most CDs don't sell for much...

Re: Debating on whether to sell my music collection or not...
I know what you mean... I have a giant CD and vinyl collection and NEVER use them. Shit I don't even have a CD player except for my computer and consoles.
A little tangent, but sometimes I have dreams where I travel back in time to 7th grade for some reason. But you know back in the early 90's CD and cassette were our only selection really. And in my dreams I get pissed as hell because I don't have all my music anymore... even in some of the dreams I am able to bring stuff from the future, but there's always this weird limitation. And I end up with a portable USB hard drive with 200 gigs of music in mp3 and ogg vorbis, but I have no way of playing it.
What the gay... stupid dreams. Sometimes I wonder what that dream means, because it is ALWAYS about music. Well, that and math... don't ask. I guess it's the only timeless thing I could be able to bring. It's intangible and even if I traveled to the 12th century it'd still make sense. If I traveled to the 12th century and played some Nine Inch Nails for people I'd probably be burned at the stake, or yammered on about computer programming, same thing.
I'd love to travel in time and hang out with Euler in the 18th century, that'd be pimp. Him all blind and his annoying kids throwing stuff.

Personally, I feel like the desire to own PHYSICAL things rather than files is an indicator of how much you love a particular hobby. Gaming is my passion, and I have a LOT of video games that are actual retail copies rather than isos or roms. I realize that you can download and emulate practically anything these days, and I do some of that occasionally with certain games, but the great majority of my gaming is done with PHYSICAL copies that I bought. I just like owning the stuff.
Now with other hobbies of mine, which I'm a bit less passionate about, it's different. Ninety percent of my music is just files on my mp 3 player, though there are about a handful of artists I love enough that I buy the cds. This is the exception rather than the rule though. Now if I loved music as much as I do gaming. It'd be the opposite. I'd probably have ten percent of my collection being mp 3s, and the other ninety percent being actual cds.
I guess I'm saying go ahead and get rid of it. I don't think you'd even consider it if you loved music as much as you do gaming. You should go for some kind of lossless format though, if you're ripping songs from all of those cds. At least keep the quality of those tracks intact even if you don't need the actual cds anymore.

Wow, awesome fucking reference. Pop culture enough to be noticeable, but vague enough to not seem overbearing.Ack wrote:WILD STALLIONS!lordofduct wrote:I know what you mean... It all really depends on what you collect.DVDs aren't far behind, either.

Yea I am with you. I feel the same way about DVDs. I know a dude that has over 200 DVDs. I think that is such a waste of $. You won't look at them THAT often. Plus in this day and age why even take up all of that space. Download download download. But he says he would NEVER play a burned DVD in front of a female. I said ok lolMozgus wrote:I never felt any fondness for the generic jewel cases and paper inlays, so I see no reason to keep physical copies of those CDs when its so much more convenient to keep digital copies instead. Just scan the artwork you want and be done with it.

Re: Debating on whether to sell my music collection or not...
I used to be pretty passionate about music, but my tastes have been refined so much over the last fifteen years that I have many CDs that I don't even find appealing anymore. Maybe I should take the option of slimming it down to my favorite bands.Gamerforlife wrote:Personally, I feel like the desire to own PHYSICAL things rather than files is an indicator of how much you love a particular hobby. Your point is exactly why I'm considering this. I feel like collecting goes hand in hand with passion, and stuff like my comics and music I've lost a lot of passion for. Gaming on the other hand has never died down for me, and my love for it continues to grow. I've got a laundry list of games from generations past that I still want to buy.

Re: Debating on whether to sell my music collection or not...
Well I finally got around to selling about half of my CD collection (and got a fair amount of cash for it). I didn't really feel bad about it at all, don't think I'll be missing the actual discs later on.
Might even get around to selling off the rest.
