Apparently Sarkessian (The woman from the Tropes vs Women in videogames) has taken footage from other people without permission or credit.

That's called Fair Use. You're allowed to use clips and snippets from other media for critique and reviewing purposes. This is extremely common, and not the "scandal" her increasingly-desperate detractors are making it out to be.

She should credit people though, that's common courtesy.

(PS - we have a whole thread about her series)

Taking someone's video of a game and using it as footage without permission is a shitty thing to do, no matter what the law of the United States says.

Ideally she would have shot each individual user a PM saying "yo I'm gonna use a clip of your vid in my next video" and then credited each user - either in the "credits" of the video or in the description box (better to do both actually).

She does not (and should not) need a yes/no "permission" from a user to use a clip.

You feel she doesn't need to, I feel she does. It's not exactly an outrageous position to have, I would say the same if she had taken any of Racketboy's pictures.

It's not really up for argument though - she has no legal requirement to get permission.

Nor is it even feasible given all the dead/abandoned YT accounts, flaky users who ignore PMs, and those that would outright say no because they don't approve of her thesis.

Gay Marriage isn't legal either, doesn't mean it's wrong. As I said in my previous post, I think it's a shitty thing to do no matter what the law of your country says.

That's bullshit man, lack of consent doesn't mean consent.

It never said it implied consent and it's a moot point as she doesn't legally need consent! That is the entire point of Fair Use, it protects people who wish to examine a topic in a critical light. If she needed explicit consent from every user she would have to deal with folks saying "no because I think you're videos/viewpoint/whatever are shit."

I am meeting you halfway - I do think she should have contacted everyone whose footage was used.

I think this is a "scandal" manufactured by those folks who don't like her videos, but also don't have the intellectual prowess to actually critique the subject matter.

That's about all I'll say for now - as again, we have a separate thread for this topic. 8)

Arrgh man! I know she might perhaps be legally entitled to do so, I just find it shitty.
