Buying Empty Genesis Cases

Does anyone do this? Also, I find it odd someone has all these laying around with the artwork intact (I was originally just looking for some empty plain black ones). What does everyone think of the legitmacy of these and is it something collectors do to complete cart only finds or do they frown upon it?

People do that sort of thing to complete cart-only finds all the time. Nobody I know of frowns upon it, though people might raise an eyebrow if you mix something like a greatest hits cart with a non-greatest hits box.

Are there "trusted" sites or any rules of thumb to it? I just worry about the artwork being a facsimile. Or do it even matter? To me it feels like it does.

I've bought empty boxes for just about every cart system on occasion. Places with large collections of them usually got them from rental places that had them stored in the back while games were rented in translucent hard plastic cases that you could tell if the cart was in there at a glance.

Agree, drives me nuts trying to get a CIB matched set at times. Gamestop mixed up the Greatest Hits and Black labels all the time since they were the same SKU. Employees would not take the time to match the case and disc.

@ Snatch - Maybe just buy a two or three cases from that site at first? Without pictures its a guesstimate if you are getting an original case with original cover or not. It did specify no manual in "case" you missed that. If you do buy some, please post along with a picture of what comes in the mail. This could be a good source for one trying to CIB their games.
