OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day
Re: OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day
I just saw this on Retrode's site, pretty neat: http://www.retrode.org/2013/06/ouya-ret ... n-success/

Are there specific consoles for developers or can you use the ODK with the regular console (assuming there is a difference)?
//edit @Ziggy - Do you have a retrode? I really like the idea of being able to copy and store save files easily. Also - besides copying the rom, can you actually write to it (i'm guessing no)?

That is slick. I was just going to pickup two of the mayflash controller adapters via RacketstoreZiggy587 wrote:I just saw this on Retrode's site, pretty neat: http://www.retrode.org/2013/06/ouya-ret ... n-success/

No, I do not have a Retrode, but I really, really want one! They're $90 and the N64 adapter is another $35. One day.fvgazi wrote://edit @Ziggy - Do you have a retrode? It can read (and I assume write) the SRAM, and you can read (dump) the ROM. But being the the ROM is Read Only Memory, no, you cannot write to it.
Right now I have a SNES programmer from Tototek that allows me to dump ROMs as well as read and write SRAM, but its interface is parallel and what a pain in the ass that is! I have an old XP box that I keep around for just this programmer. The Retrode is USB, and the bone stock unit has a SNES and Genesis cart slot (as well as the controller ports for said consoles) and adapters available for other consoles. So, yeah, the Retrode is only light years ahead.
But, but, with the Retrode you can use your real N64 carts!fastbilly1 wrote:That is slick. I was just going to pickup two of the mayflash controller adapters via Racketstore
I think the Retrode plus OUYA is pretty cool, but it's not like it isn't anything you could have done already with some other form of emulation. The size is nice and portable if you wanted to go to a friends house, but it's not like an actual N64 is that much bigger than the two units. Personally, I would rather build a compact PC if I wanted emulation on my TV. But still, it's pretty cool.

How long is the Ouya's hardware going to stay relevant? I think NVIDIA already released the Tegra 4... and the Ouya is rockin' a Tegra 3...
Are they planning on making hardware revisions?

They were thinking yearly updates. However, I would think they'll wait around 2 per revision. I don't think they will want the price increasing over $100 and, with the overclocked hardware, they can probably get away with waiting a little longer.Opa Opa wrote:How long is the Ouya's hardware going to stay relevant? Older. Not wiser.

I think I'm going for the OUYA around the end of this month.

I really like the look of the Retrode, all though I would want it to play NES and Megadrive games.
Ouya just doesn't appeal to me. I dunno. I'd rather make set box PC.

Re: OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day
I really don't see what the issue with the Tegra 3 is. It's a cheap system that's not meant to have bleeding edge graphics. The other consoles reach a point where they're using 6 or 7 year old technology, the Ouya's Tegra 3 is only a year or so old.
Anyway, I'm having TONS of fun dealing with getting my games running on Ouya. Can't get the thing connected to my PC for shit, firmware doesn't work with USB flash drives yet, so I'm uploading apks to dropbox, downloading them with the clunky web browser, and then getting to see all the stuff that doesn't work properly.
The actual consumer end of the experience is pretty good though.

Yeah, I banged my head against the wall for an hour before I managed to smooth out the process. I installed Airdroid on Ouya, so now I just open that, go to the URL on my computer and drag 'n drop the .apk's to the Ouya. For some reason the files don't show up on Ouya's Download folder, so I have to install them via Airdroid.Jrecee wrote:Anyway, I'm having TONS of fun dealing with getting my games running on Ouya.
