Gaming was at its peak when the top three companies were Nintendo, Sega, and NEC.
As far as platformers, shoot-em ups, JRPGs, and beat-em ups are concerned; I agree.

But genres like racing games, fighting games, open-world type games, FPS, Action-RPGs, and sports games got much better in the following years. And some of that was due to Western influence (well, except for the fighting games, anyways).

Having a Western company sell consoles is no problem. Microsoft influencing the console market...that's a problem.

I wish some of that DRM were back. Being able to sell your license for a digital game you didn't like is an awesome idea.

Yup. This was pretty novel. The way they explained sharing was pretty damn cool too. Like I said before:

It sounds like I can buy Castle Crashers 2 or Halo 5 and my brother can co-op with me online even if he doesn't own a copy and he can also have full access to the game on his own.
There are a lot of things that the Xbox One was planning to do that were even better than Steam in terms of allowing access and rights with DRMed games. Bigger and better digital sales would have likely been a more feasible and regular feature as well. Now that stuff is gone so that I can own a disc? I'm not sure I like the trade off.

I seem to remember reading that only one person can play a game from a shared library at once, so I don't think this co-op thing would have worked

I seem to think it was different, but even that idea of lending a game out digitally is pretty cool.

The biggest problem they had was poor explanation of WHY their proposed policies would be a BETTER way of consuming games. They did a horrible job even explaining - let alone selling - the benefits of always online, a tightly controlled rights system, etc.

EDIT: Here was MS's description:
Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.
and here's a longer article on it (the whole thing is worth a read): http://kotaku.com/rumor-about-xbox-one- ... -534484570

That was the topic of our lunch conversations after we made the announcements: we were doing a piss poor job of messaging.

To be honest, I liked the idea of family sharing. Supposedly a new game is released , 5 people can chip in on the $60 , costing each $12 and then we all can share it. Thats what I understood out of Major Nelson. Even better , you could resell that game for $30 sometime later and in the end each would have paid $6 really to play the game.

I think there was a limitation where only 1 can play the game at a time, which can work out. 5 people buy 5 games , and they take turns each playing a game then switching. You will end up paying $60 for 5 games instead of $300
