That would make it a lot easier. I'll skip '05 because it feels more like part of last gen.

2006: Gears of War (honestly, '06 wasn't the best year for gaming)
2007: The Orange Box (possibly best game this gen)
2008: Metal Gear Solid 4
2009: Uncharted 2
2010: Halo Reach (Bad Company 2 is a close contender)
2011: Batman Arkham City (other possible best game this gen)
2012: Far Cry 3

Metroid Prime 3 for me, hands down. Of all the gaming experiences I had this gen, it was the most polished and engrossing.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

That's kinda like saying "Sonic's Sega Genesis Collection" is the best game this gen or something. The Orange Box is a compilation, not a game in and of itself.

Best release? An argument could be made, I guess. Best game? Not applicable.

Xenoblade is my pick. I sunk over 100 hours into it and I had a blast the whole time. I will likely buy a WiiU when X comes out.

I don't have a dead set favorite, so my picks will be a bit scattered:

Best Fighter - Super Street Fighter IV (AE)
Best Shmup - DoDonPachi Resurrection
Best Handheld - Ivy the Kiwi
Best Platformer - Super Mario Galaxy
Best Puzzle - Kororinpa Marble Mania

Honorable mention: Boom Blox, Tetris Party, Nanostray, Skylanders Giants, Deathsmiles, Yoshi Touch n' Go, Safecracker.

Honorable mention - homebrew, etc: Fruit Ninja, Pixeljunk Side Scroller

I personally don't play mission / strategy / rpg / fps stuff, so my tastes are pretty limited. I have say, I think the wii library had so many outstanding games spread out against so many genres - I think in 10 years it will rival SNES as the best Nintendo library. For those who think it is all gimmicky motion control games...just, no. That isn't to say there isn't a ton of fun stuff that use motion controls (Wii sports, Mario Kart, Ivy the kiwi, Marble Saga, Gravity, Elebits) but most of the great stuff has it as optional or not at all.

@wclem - maybe put all mentioned titles in the OP as a tool to use for others just browsing for titles they passed over this generation...?

Sure it's no Counter Strike/Quake, but the longevity and popularity of that game speaks volumes. How many people still play Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops?
A lot of people still do, considering they have sequels they are still fairly popular. People still play COD 4.
Can you think of any other online focused FPS game released during this generation that would rival TF2? The new Tribes game or ARMA 2 perhaps, but both of those are considerably younger and less popular, so it's too early to tell.
That's different from being a competitive game though, TF2 is a highly popular game, I have no problem admitting that.

It is fascinating to me how opposite our taste of games are. The stuff you dont play is at the top of my interests, while your favorite genres are ones that I typicall avoid myself..

And for the TF2 discussion, I really do not understand the appeal. I didnt enjoy the game at all.
