Been trying to build on my collection having bad luck..

Post by SuperSonic7 »

I have a small collection I have grown over the years of gaming with all the major consoles. Plus a virtual boy lol. Next generation is so disappointing that I am not even going to touch it. They are just PCs in tiny boxes with no blast processing :C. Instead I look to get back into the classics because I haven't really enjoyed anything since the dreamcast died ;~;.. And they are cheaper than retail games. More gaming for the dollar.

So I started going to garage sales and flea markets. I hit them up as soon as they open but have horrible luck. Yesterday there was a guy asking 75 dollars for a SNES and 3 standard games. I snagged 2 NES and 6 games for 60 bucks which was not a good deal after I think about it. I also found out they need new connectors which I can do but kinda pissed me off. So I hope to sell those for 35 dollars each on craigslist I hope.. So best I come out is 6 games for free.

I run across the same thing at garage sales I went to one and someone had a boxed NES. Asking 100 dollars.. Ugh... I never find a box of games for 40.00 Everything is already listed at ebay prices. I have done OK by sometimes picking up newer sport games then trading them in at gamestop but that doesn't get me anywhere with classic titles.

Oh and I missed a huge opportunity to fund my collection I had 14 sealed copies of Xenoblade lololol. And I sold them all right before they went out of print for 79.99 each. I even exported one to Canada for someone.

So I dunno what to do.. I can repair electronics but I never find 20 dollar broken 3ds or 15 dollar Neo geo AES systems that need repair. Everything seems to be standard ebay price.

hey new person.

sorry to hear about your less than stellar luck in trying to find new old games.

These last few years its gotten harder to find games 'in the wild'

Correction; not that hard but you need more $$$$

Collecting takes time, now more than ever. Competiton is fierce and theres less games out there. Or being sold off from a collectors hoard.

Not to mention people that think the games that they have in their attic is worth thousands now. That argument is in a different thread.

If you look around here on racketboy, you can find tips and ideas on where to get cheaper games.

There are so many members here with buy/sell/trade threads too. I'm sure if you have a couple of bucks you can make an offer here. Almost all of us here dont gouge like Ebay/craigslist.

I dont really trade here, but there are lots of cool people here with experience on what games should be worth.

You just have to keep trying and soon you'll be finding games in the weridest places. (sometimes you have to drive out of town!)

Bro, I know just how you feel, trust me. In south florida, 99% of the time garage sales have nothing good, craigslist has a few things that are mostly overpriced, and I'll find little to nothing at thrift stores. And I have to do all this on my bike. Cuz im not old enough to drive. And I dont have a credit card to buy from Ebay (dont wanna spend 50 on a ebay card when all I want is a couple games).

And that sounds like it sucks right? But its actually great! Know why? Because when I find a SNES or N64 SPORTS game I get excited. Yeah, I get excited when I find sports games. But when I found Sonic Adventure CIB for 50 cents I went crazy! So I take nothing for granted and I enjoy that! But maybe thats just me...

Where are all the dreamcast games.. I NEVER SEE THEM. I remember a while back some people were saying it was going to be the next gold mine in value of games. It was the best last system from sega. Maybe greatest system of all time. Didn't even make it 2 years so that means much fewer copies of games compared to ps2 or any full 5 year run system

A big part of it is persistence. I hit my local Goodwill 2 times a week & come up dry 75% of the time. The other cheap finds make it worth it.

I was hitting up Thrift stores 3 times a week. Burning more gas than just buying some stuff off of ebay. Maybe I should just stick to the one near me instead of driving all over town? Only thing is there is a retro shop right next to it like 1/2 mile. Wonder if they hit it up too lol?

You gotta find thrift stores, GoodWill, Garage Sales, Flea Markets etc. Going to retro game stores aren't the best place. Sure you will find the stuff, but they are much more expensive. It really is the cost of convenience of securing a copy of something you want instead of having to duke it out on Ebay or scour the Earth in search of something.

I also suggest, making a name for yourself in the retro gaming community. By talking to others like us here on the Racketboy forums and expressing your love for games, you can open up a world of opportunities to secure and expand your collection. There are great deals in the Buy/Sell/Trade threads that pop up all the time.

Also, if you happen to have some items in your collection you are willing to part with, jump into the Secret Santa in July Thread and take part there, you may be really surprised at what you might get!

Put yourself out there. It takes time to really secure a foothold in the collecting world, but soon enough you may find people in your area that share your passion that you can go out together and find stuff that you love.

Are ebay lot auctions worth bothering with?
