The most you would pay for big ticket games...

Post by CFFJR »

So, two things first off.

First, I know we have a topic discussing the most one would pay for retro games in general. I'm looking for more specific examples of expensive games in this topic.

Second, I'm aware that plenty of gamers would never pay more than 20 to 30 bucks for any game. Fair enough, I understand and respect that, but its not what I'm asking.

Anyway, most systems have at least a couple of games that are crazy expensive. The likes of Earthbound, Snatcher, and the like. For the purpose of this discussion, I'm thinking anything over 100 bucks at the low end.

The question is, knowing what these games generally go for, what's the most you would pay for a given title? I want specific examples here, because if you're not interested in owning say, Earthbound, then it really isn't worth anything to you, market value or not, right? So it needs to be something you're actually interested in owning at some point.

So if there's a game you want that goes for anywhere from 150 - 250 bucks, (I think a complete Chrono Trigger falls in that range, as an example) what would you pay? Where's your hard line that says, "that's too expensive, I'll wait for a better deal"?

Please talk condition too. CIB is probably the most interesting, but for the sake of simplicity lets leave out brand new/sealed, just because of the outrageous markups that come with it.

Great thread. If you couldn't tell by the avatar, Earthbound is in my top 3 favorite games of all time (if not #1). Sadly, I haven't got it yet. Still waiting to find it in the wild (a man can hope :D). But considering im 15 years old, I probably would draw the line at 150. Sadly, I would be lucky to find it loose that cheap :(

Wouldn't pay more than $110 on Slap Fight MD, more than $115 on Panorama Cotton, $130 on Alien Soldier and Glaylancer, or $150 on Twinkle Tale.

Most other big ticket games (Rule of Rose, Rakugaki Showtime, Madou Monogatari, Tryrush Deppy) I wouldn't pay anywhere near $60 for, let alone what they usually go for.

A couple times a year I'll go over $60 for a game or two.

In general though, I don't like to go over......... $20.

About, about tree-fiddy...

The only real example I have of this is Snatcher. Bought a just-out-of-shrinkwrap condition copy off a friend (with Jurassic Park for Sega CD thrown in) for $100. It's the only time I can recall that I've paid more than MSRP for a game.

I really try to avoid collecting things for collecting sake, though it still does happen.

Most of the time, to be worth high 3 or low 4 figures it has to meet the following criteria:
-Official / Legitimate
-Limited availability
-Attractive
-Something i'll actually play
-Not be too niche and thus not be easily/quickly flippable, if needed

If it doesn't meet all of those criteria, then i'm not interested. Typically when I value something - I have a real hard time paying over the lowest i've seen it go for, so that is typically what I value it at.

Some titles that meet that criteria that i'd like to own:
Psychic Killer Taromaru - CIB - SAT-JP - I'd pay $175, usually does $250+
Magical Pop'n - CIB - SFC - I'd pay $150, usually does $180-300 depending on condition
Mushi Futari 1.5 PCB (w/shock and art) - I'd pay $425, does about $500
Rage of the Dragons AES - CIB - I'd pay $400, does $600-800
