Game lending coming to steam

Post by Krejlooc »

Haha, looks like valve won't let microsoft's lone Xbox One's lone DD advantage over Steam stay a selling point for long.

Opt in to the new beta, then open up Steam/Public/steamui_english.txt

You'll find the following changes:
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title" "Shared game library"
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText" "Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%. Playing now will send %borrower% a notice that it's time to quit."
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_BorrowerText" "This shared game is currently unavailable. Please try again later or buy this game for your own library."
This is the only thing that the beta changes. The above un-used lines are the only additions with this beta. Sounds like you're going to be able to share your library with a buddy going forward.

Heh, can't you kinda do that already by sharing accounts with people you know IRL? This sounds way more convenient though.

That's technically against the TOS, and possibly illegal in some countries. This is, presumably, a steam-sanctioned and fully legal alternative.

It's looked like Valve has been on a path to set this kind of stuff up for awhile. Considering the trading and marketplace junk is up and running now, it probably won't be much longer before we start seeing the ability to re-sell some of the licenses people possess. (Though, I imagine that has a lot of legal implications to have blanket policies for it)

Pretty cool. I hope it's a bit more generous than the gift passes.

Agreed. I am interested in some of the games my buddies love, but hesitate to buy them at full price. Even if this is just a timed demo, this will be awesome. Though if it is a full loan (meaning it acts like you own it), it means my Wife's Steam account might be lending some of its titles to others until her new PC is operational.

I can see it working just like the free weekends. But maybe for a week or something.

Steam wont let you log from a different computer.

That is just a security setting.
