I look forward to coming back to this thread at the end of the year after we see that both consoles put up good sales numbers.

If history has taught us anything, it's that the majority of gamers won't let something like this come between them and the next release of <major franchise here>.

A lot of publishers will probably find appeal in the idea that they don't have to give up a cut of their money to used sales, so they'll develop games for Xbox One, and if they hit a high enough benchmark of users with Xbox One consoles, then they'll probably also be happy to give that system more exclusives. This will have a cyclical effect as the increased amount of exciting exclusives will make users more willing to give up on used sales and to let their Kinects watch them masturbate and eat Doritos (possibly, but not necessarily, at the same time).

I really hope this isn't the case. Microsoft hasn't been doing themselves any favors and even non-gaming journalists such as TIME and Wallstreet have been reporting on the Xbox One's anti-consumerism policies.

That isn't to say that I don't expect the system to sell at all, just not in the same capacity as the 360 ever did. Only a portion of the 360's userbase had an Xbox Gold account, and I only expect a portion of those to really be on board with the Xbox One.

That isn't to say that I don't expect the system to sell at all, just not in the same capacity as the 360 ever did. Only a portion of the 360's userbase had an Xbox Gold account, and I only expect a portion of those to really be on board with the Xbox One.

Whilst I fully expect the Xbox One to sell better than it probably deserves, I feel that numbers at the end of this year aren;t great metrics. There'll be a lot of early adopters either way. It's how sales continue over time that'll be the interesting thing to watch.

I fully expect the PS4 to overall outsell the Xbox One, but it won't be anything like the Playstation vs. Saturn slaughter; the final numbers will be fairly close.

Because, let's be honest. For the average consumer the only policy that they actually care about when you tell them the system features is the "maybe I can't sell my games back to Gamestop". The rest of them you can get them to express disappointment with if you break it down and explain it to them, but come November they'll have forgotten all of that. Because they look at "how will this affect me" and see little impact. They aren't thinking 10-20 years down the line, because they aren't us. We all have stories of our friends who can't believe we still have a PS2/Gamecube, much less our SNES and Genesis.

Actually, there might be a political angle to this next console war. In the last few weeks, more news stories have broken about corporations spying on their customers and passing that information on to various government agencies. If enouhg outrage is stoked, then the Kinect's always on tech might be viewed as another method for gaining that information. This might serve to keep outraged individuals from purchasing the Xbox One for a machine which might engage in similar practices down the line but isn't necessarily as overt.

Privacy is swiftly becoming a major political issue. It the heat keeps up through the next six months, Microsoft might just feel a backlash.
