Best system for last gen multi-platform games? PS2/Xbox/NGC

Post by GrouchoGlasses »

In the early 2000's, gaming culture on the internet wasn't near what it has become today. I'm having some trouble discerning which of the 3 consoles of last generation generally held the best versions of Multi-Platform games. I'm hoping it is like 360/PS3 where the decision comes down to controller preference, but I wanted to check with the community before I beef up my 3rd party collection.

Alien Hominid
Lord of the Rings games
Second Sight
Beyond Good and Evil
I-Ninja
Scaler
Dr Muto
Vexx
Destroy all Humans
Metal Arms
Hulk Ultimate Descruction
Sphinx Cursed Mummy
Gladius

This is just about all of my 3rd party wishlist that I don't know which console to purchase on yet. I don't need a game-by-game recommendation, but which console generally preforms the best?

Thanks

Actually, in the vast majority of cases the 360 runs games at a slightly better level of fidelity (frames, detail, fluidity, etc.) than the PS3 for multiplatform stuff - so it isn't just a controller preference. That said, on some games the differences are very small and controller preference is really the deciding factor.

Generally (but not always) the Xbox>GCN>PS2 in terms of most performance indicators.

The most prominent perpetrator of this is Bayonetta. I generally prefer my "eastern" or more Japanese style games on PS3 and "western" on Xbox 360. Bayonetta is the only game I've had to break my rule. It is much smoother in Xbox vs. its PS3 version. Otherwise, the difference in other games is so minimal, I haven't been bothered.

There are a lot of games where the differences are more than minimal. Here's a nice list of totals and game by game breakdowns: http://misterslimm.wordpress.com/videog ... f-results/

Although I prefer the PS2 over the GCN for some games, this rule is generally true. Also - and although you didn't ask for it - here is a game-by-game analysis:

Alien Hominid - NGC
Lord of the Rings games - Xbox
Second Sight - Xbox
Beyond Good and Evil - This is a tough one...GCN or Xbox
I-Ninja - Xbox
Scaler - Xbox
Dr Muto - Xbox
Vexx - Xbox
Destroy all Humans - Xbox
Metal Arms - Xbox
Hulk Ultimate Descruction - Xbox
Sphinx Cursed Mummy - Xbox
Gladius - Xbox

I hope that helps!

Well there is the PS2 Alien Hominid PAL version that has extra levels and can be converted to NTSC.

 Maybe get all three last gen consoles, each has advantages and all are inexpensive. Then you can weed out each for its best version as well as exclusive games. So many variables to look at; controller preference, game load time, graphics, extra levels, hard drive install or GBA link capability.

x2, get all 3 that's what I did. It's at the point were all 3 are cheap enough to own. Be forewarned that even though the GameCube is fairly cheap, the games for that console are very expensive. PS2 and Xbox on the other hand have games for relatively cheap.

ESPECIALLY Xbox. You can get tons of games for next to nothing. Most multiplats are cheapest on Xbox too, even though often it's the best version.

I still see retail Gamecubes being sold for 15 dollars sometimes, they're extremely cheap, same as the Xbox.

As someone said, Xbox games are DIRT cheap, I would get all my multiplat games for that console personally. They are the most cost efficient, and Xbox usually ran their games the best. Most of the multiplat games I can think of ran pretty evenly between the 3 consoles, with PS2 lagging the most behind.

When it comes to fighting games, I would go with PS2 though (or Dreamcast). PS2 usually has the best stick support, and its controller is probably more practical.
