Headphone suggestions

I'm going to the US by the end of July and, evidently, I intend to smuggle some stuff back to Brazil.

I need some headphones and had considered buying Beats by Dre. However, I can't really justify spending 200 dollars on one of those, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Does anyone have any good suggestion of a good headphone that doesn't break the bank?

I'm just an average user, I'm not a DJ, nor do I work with music, nor am I audiophile or am acquanted with the subtler nuances of sound.

I just want a quality headphone so that I can actually listen to stuff clearly when I'm taking a plane or commuting, mostly. Something that most earbuds do not allow me to do.

So, anyone?

Overall, I would not suggest beats though. I've never really liked the way they sounded, and despite the fact that you can hear them from 10 feet away, when you actually use them they are pretty quiet.

Plus, if you have them, you automatically gain 10 douche points. You're only allowed 15 before I start talking about you behind your back.

I've used several earbuds and I can't hear a thing when I'm commuting, so I thought on-ear headphones would solve that issue.

Hmm. I'm not much for on ear, so I might not be much help there.

In ear are a mixed bag. The last pair I had could absolutely drown out any sound I needed, but they weren't durable- I ripped on of the buds of the wire accidentally just pulling it out of my bag... They were BassBuds, if you were interested. Skull Candies might be an option for both in ear and on ear, but I have no experience with them.

Now that you talked about earbuds I'm really undecided. Skullcandy seems to be nice, though. Anyone else can vouch for other headphones?

I'd recommend audio-technica. They're mostly studio monitoring head phones, but they're relatively inexpensive, and have great sound in general. Very unlikely that you wouldn't be able to hear your music with them. They tend to have some noise bleeding, if that's an issue for you, and for the utmost comfort, you might want some replacement cup pads.

If you're just interested in looking fly while walking around and listening to music, you may as well buy the Beats by Dre, though.

I bought a pair of Skullcandy earbuds when they were first hitting the market, and aside from sounding like styrofoam and tin foil, they were the cheapest pieces of crap I've ever seen. Lot of people seem to like them, though. They might have turned things around in the last 6 years.

Yeah, I don't know, I'm going by what they look on their website. I've never even seen any of the headphones you guys are mentioning.

Also, I really don't want that much to look fly. $200 is way over my budget for impressing people while listening to music.

Sennheiser makes a quality product. Their big studio headphones are top notch, but I don't own any of those because they are kind of pricey. I do own some of their noise cancelling ear buds, and I'm really impressed with them. They block out most outside noise really well, they sound great, and even the bass is pretty full for a bud. I bought them on some new egg sale for under $20 at the time. They're a great value if you want a cheap, but still pretty damn good headphone.

I blow through headphones quickly, so I usually go cheap unless I plan for them to be studio phones, and only then will I cross that $100 mark.

Best value for your money @ under $50:
KOSS PortaPro. The drivers are the same as some of their more expensive ones and they weigh almost nothing.

I used to have a pair of Sennheiser. They were very comfortable and sounded pretty good. I think I paid a little over $100.

For earbuds, I'm using a set of JVC ones with spongey rubber. I can jam them right inside my ear and they block all the outside noise as good as earplugs so I can turn the volume right down on my MP3 player and save on batteries. The bass is surprisingly good on them and they only cost around $15
