Thinking back on some of the level hacks people have made for Super Metroid and Link to the Past, I was wondering if anybody out there has done anything similar with Nintendo 64 games in general. I tried Google searching, and it appears that there are some.
But I wanted to know if you guys have played any of these hacked roms before. How were they? Which one stands out as the most fun to play? Most challenging? Any hacks that take the whole game on a dream like acid trip?
Any good hacked N64 roms?
Re: Any good hacked N64 roms?
I haven't played any myself, though ages ago I downloaded a Ocarina of Time cel shade hack, which makes the graphics look on par with Gamecube games (apparently). Also there's a Super Mario 64 hack that changes the tilesets to an SMB1 theme. Both aren't simply plug and play IIRC, you need to put certain files in certain places within your Project64 folder.
Both are available on Underground Gamer.

There of course aren't as many N64 hacks as there are SNES, but they do exist and I'm sure we'll have more and more as time goes on.

Pretty sure I've seen the same kind of thing done for PS1 game too.
Texture hacks are fun to look at screen shots of, but they're not for me. They'll only ever be playable in emulators, they're impossible to play on real hardware. And it's not what I think of when I hear "ROM hack."
Romhacking.net (RHDN) has some: http://www.romhacking.net/?page=hacks&g ... ksearch=Go
Note that hacks can range from the silliest little thing to full game hacks. GoldenEye X is a real popular one, it takes Perfect Dark and turns it into Goldeneye. So far it's the multiplayer portion only, but I think they have plans to eventually have it be the full game. And the most important part, it's playable on real hardware.
I'm sure there's more hacks out there that haven't been uploaded to RHDN, but they usually have all the best ones.
Yeah, texture hacks. There's an article on the RB homepage, with lots of screen shots, covering texture hacks for N64 games...Nyukki wrote:Ocarina of Time cel shade hack, which makes the graphics look on par with Gamecube games (apparently). The two I know the most about are Goldeneye X (Goldeneye being remade in the Perfect Dark engine - multiplayer is mostly done) and the Coop Mario 64 mod:

old Goldeneye X trailer:
Unlike most N64 mods, Goldeneye X will run on a cart. Well a flashcart, no one makes N64 repros due to cost.

Re: Any good hacked N64 roms?
Excellent, thanks guys. I'll definitely have to check out Goldeneye X, along with that link Ziggy posted. The texture hacks are pretty damn awesome, but right now, I'm mainly looking for stuff to play on my Everdrive cart.
A little while ago, I managed to run a hacked version of F-Zero X on the Everdrive. Had a lot of surprisingly well made custom tracks.
I'll keep this thread updated once I try out more stuff.

Id be interested in that FzeroX trackpack you spoke of. I am always looking for more tracks for Fzero and Mario Kart games.
