I use Doomsday as my source port and it lets me aim up, even though the game doesn't actually have a vertical axis from the perspective of hit detection. But it's nice, because it satisfies that psychological need to aim at what I'm shooting at.Stark wrote:Started up Doom for the Summer Challenge, as this is a game I've played a few times but never beaten. So weird to go back and play a game that doesn't allow you to aim up! I'm enjoying it though so far. Let's see if I can stick it through.
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

Agreed, but after playing KZ2 it's hard going back to revisit 1. Even the HD edition.Jagosaurus wrote:Killzone 1 on PS2.
A bit dated but a good game. Very good looking game for the PS2.

I'm currently playing this as part of Doom 3 BFG, is there a way to add Doomsday to that? Or should I just download the whole game separate from Steam?MrPopo wrote:I use Doomsday as my source port and it lets me aim up, even though the game doesn't actually have a vertical axis from the perspective of hit detection. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I thought Doom had a limited vertical axis, case in point, the Imp on the raised platform in the room with the small path and the goo near the end of E1M1. You can't aim up, but the game compensates for enemies above you, sometimes.MrPopo wrote:I use Doomsday as my source port and it lets me aim up, even though the game doesn't actually have a vertical axis from the perspective of hit detection

The game compensates for it all the time. The entire game is actually on a 2D plane from a gameplay perspective. The in-game map demonstrates this.ExedExes wrote:I thought Doom had a limited vertical axis, case in point, the Imp on the raised platform in the room with the small path and the goo near the end of E1M1. You probably can go into the Doom 3 directory and find the .wad file for Doom. You can even point Doomsday to that .wad without moving it out of the Doom 3 directory.I'm currently playing this as part of Doom 3 BFG, is there a way to add Doomsday to that? Finishing up my Platinum trophy for Borderlands 1 (I'm level 47 now, and just need the level 50 trophy for plat).
I was late to the Borderlands party. Started with Borderlands 2, LOVED it and after I platted that I decided to play through the first one. Great, great games and I usually get burned out on a game after playing through it multiple times but not the Borderlands games.

Yeah, the illusion of height in Doom is exactly that, an illusion. The game is entirely on an x/y grid with no real z-axis. Carmack was a genius coming up with that visual trick (along with his lighting system). It's why you can shoot enemies at supposedly impossible angles, and also why rooms never overlap each other, nor are there any real bridges.MrPopo wrote:The game compensates for it all the time. Wow, well there we go. Although I fooled around pushing random walls first in Wolf3D, Doom was the first FPS that I learned to really explore the levels out for instead of going from beginning to end, a feature I do now in every FPS I play, computer or console, even if its an area that may have nothing there or nothing to do with the game.Ack wrote:Yeah, the illusion of height in Doom is exactly that, an illusion. Reminded at how big and grand those Doom levels are, isn't it sad that we truly have gone from this to this just in FPS map design these days? (slight exaggeration, I know it's not as bad as this suggests)

Sadly, that map is no longer accurate. You have forgotten on the current side to mark all the places where the game requires the AI open a door for you.

Don't forget the slow-motion breaches and linear vehicle sections.
