I have no problem with this. If publishers (and HOPEFULLY) developers get a small cut on used games I think that is fantastic. Provided the activation fee isn't ridiculous like the article is suggesting. It has to still make sense to buy used.

What about people wanting to trade games? People on racketboy wanting to sell games? Just because gamestop has shitty business practices, doesn't mean the rest of the world has to pay for it. Specially us in countries where gamestop doesn't exist.

You trade them on XBL, right? I mean, nothing is 100% certain yet, but Microsoft seemed to imply that you could sell codes using their online service. And if the buyer wants the physical copy just mail it to them.

More than anything we probably just need to wait to hear the official word from Microsoft. But honestly, it doesn't sound all that awful to me. It's not a step forward or anything.. Just a step sideways and maybe even slightly backwards. But not significantly enough to bother me to the point of declaring that I'll NEVER get one.

I would be horrifically upset about the fee if it was indeed small, but the key issue here is longevity. Do you think the authentication service will be around 15 years from now? When time goes by and the retro community looks back on that system, will they be able to experience those games, collect those games and most importantly, be able to play those games? Will that cloud service be available as well in that time? If not that will make some games completely unplayable regardless of if you got it used.

I think that is my only real gripe with the system. I can get over the used thing if it was within reason. I can hide the stupid Kinect, but what I really want is to be able to play the system after it is dead.

Because they switched to x86 I would think there is a very good chance of backwards compatibility on future Xbox consoles.

Now if Microsoft were to stop making Xbox consoles and shut down XBL... Well, I have no idea.

Exactly, what will Dave's history books say when he writes the historiography 8th generation of video game consoles? Are we getting to the point in technology that whatever replaces the current means it is entirely obsolete and unusable too? I'm curious if that window will slim. Will services on the Xbox 360 be removed in a shorter time than it was between Xbox and Xbox 360?

Hard to say, but something to keep in mind is that all these companies are in business to make money. If it's profitable to keep services around, they'll do it. Given the cost of making a AAA title these days, much less for the upcoming generation, I would somewhat expect publishers to try and milk them for all they're worth.

As a consideration, some of these changes will make long-term sales more interesting for platform creators and publishers. What motivation do they have to make sure that Xbox or PS2 games work on their next systems? It's not like many of those are still new sales they see profits from.
Now, if they're collecting a $2 fee from every game that changes hands, that'd be different.

Plus, some of it seems fairly speculative. Remember how Sony was claiming we could have a network of Cell processors in the home?

I think what's more likely is that, if MS (particularly) carves out a bigger niche as a living room hub, we'll see the previous gen offered as the entry model.

But this piece of SHIT? Oh no, I want this to bomb HARD. This thing HAS to fail. These policies are BULLSHIT.

Yup PS4 and/maybe Wii U it is for me, thanks for making that easy for me.
I really hope that for once consumers won't be ignorant. I see right through Microsoft's attempt to control the second hand market as well as all of the other bullshit they are planning.
