I'd be more interested in PC gaming if more of my favorite Japanese made PC games. But they don't. So my interest in PC is minimal. Just some doujin games.

Some stores used to sell used PC games, I think EB even did at one point. It was just rarer. With serial numbers and other anti-piracy measures stretching back decades, just more of a hassle to do.

New/sealed older PC games vary a bit anyway. So do console titles though. You've got random cheap stuff like Steel Diver there. Or stuff on the PC side like Blizzard titles that maintain their prices a lot longer.

Probably the bigger angle there is that PC software sells or it doesn't - it doesn't get cleared out just because it's last-gen. Plus no real entity that licenses it all, so you see more reprints and such.

I game on my PC and consoles for different games. Sports, console rpgs, and some shooters on the consoles. Strategy, western rpgs, most shooters, and other pc only titles on PC. They coexist well for me.

it was bound to happen, i mean how could we of thought that we would be buying a new console every 5-6 years for the rest of our lives!?

I did! I was actually genuinely excited to see where gaming would be many generations from now. Of course, I pretty much feel the same way as Retronomy at this point.

Why can't you? Isn't that how this generation works!?!? I must be doing it wrong. I wanted to buy every console as a kid, but couldn't so I had to choose. Now (and ever since the oXbox) I don't have to choose, I get every one and buy the exclusives on each that I want and figure out which system is best to by the multiplat titles I want. Gaming is one of my only hobbies, so all of my entertainment money goes towards it.

Same. Gaming, anime, music, and sometimes cosplay are my only hobbies.

I don't really play much drums or keyboard anymore so my music money only goes towards headphones.. And I have two pairs that satisfies my needs so I haven't been on the prowl lately.

Here's a breakdown of what I am likely to spend on said hobbies this year. Useless info, I suppose. But thinking about it, it is sort of interesting. Maybe?

Games are an investment. I tend to get every console whether I initially intend to or not. Been spending quite a bit on arcade controllers lately.. But luckily I am fairly picky so it's not a costly as it could be. I expect to spend 2.5 - 3.5k in gaming this year. And with the stuff I sell I expect to make roughly $1500.

Anime.. Well, I only buy my absolute favorites these days. I expect to spend less than $300 this year on anime. And maybe another $300 - 500 in merch. Not too bad. I download a bit, but I also got a Crunchyroll subscription. That is only $50 per year. I've made about $150 from selling merch so far this year.

Music? I buy my favorites but still not too much. I expect to spend $100 - 200 on music this year. $0 on my drum and keyboard equipment. And I have spent a good $500 on headphones just this year. But I also sold some equipment and made maybe $2200 on that.

Cosplay and conventions? Maybe $1200 - 1500 with no return.

Overall I probably spend more on food and visiting friends than anything. I would guess about $100 - 120 per week on food/visiting friends + whatever activities we do.

Steam has crazy sales yes, but I can also get new console games cheap from retailers and onlinr sites like Amazon. I rarely buy used current gen games and find deals often.

The DRM on steam looks to be close to what the xbone will have, with the exception of the online check. However, to really take advantage of the convenience of steam, you need to be online.

I don't like evrything they are doing, such as forced kinect integration, and the used game policy may be a mistake, but I find it interesting for some to say 'what, no used games? Time to get the Steambox!'
The games are cheaper, the service is better with more functionality and it doesn't cost a monthly fee. That's why people are up in arms about the Xbox One. It has worse features, costs a monthly fee to use and will cause the cost of gaming to increase.
Causing the cost of gaming to increase is pure speculation. While there are a ton of great games, many genres and blockbuster games are under represented. There is also a bunch of filler and indie/niche games. I love me some indie games, but they don't appeal on a broad scale.

XBL as a paid service has been around for about 10 years now. Nothing new there, and is actually a very strong service. I would argue steam probably has less functionality. It is great for playing games, and getting some on the cheap during sales sure. But the XB1 is also toting a bunch of media features that many but not all will be interested in.

I think too many are taking a sensational over reaction to a short hardware reveal that only hints at what will be available. I am not sold, and there are many things I am rolling my eyes over, but I am going to wait and see before I declare the sky is falling.
You're talking to a guy who has had the Xbox Live subscription for at least 7 years. I know what it is. I don't pay for it anymore because I do not want to pay for subscription and then have advertisements thrown down my throat. I simply WILL NOT pay for that. So Microsoft can go suck a huge fat dick if they think I'm going to pay any more to see advertisements. When the dashboard is 90% advertisements there is something fundamentally wrong about that experience. It provided a very good return on investment when you would get discounted games and early access to stuff. Then they stopped giving you discounts on anything but fucking DLC for Call of Dogshit and FIFA21348489210300 and threw advertisements at you incessantly. You can't start a fucking game without seeing an advertisement. What am I paying for here? Paying a subscription to access my subscription based content (lovefilm/netflix) is just absolute sheer lunacy. Why are people paying for this shit?

If PS4 comes out with paid for multiplayer we're fucked. It means Microsoft have won and they'll continue to push the boundary until their entire arm is in your anus wallet.

Time to get yourself a MSX (2), Sharp X68000, PC-9801 and FM Towns and start importing some games from Japan.

Japanese developers excell at console gaming and Western developers excell at PC gaming. Both output better games during the 1990s and the early part of 2000s than today. If you're not giving either one a proper chance and you're going in with the wrong mindset, of course you'll end up being dissapointed. For instance if you're used to RPGs like Arcanum, ToEE, Planescape, BG2 etc and you're not willing to accumulate yourself to a different style of gameplay, storytelling, graphics, artstyle etc, you might say that there aren't any good RPGs on SNES/PS1/PS2. Once you're not expecting Chrono Trigger/FF7/Persona 4/[insert good console RPG here] to be like those aforementioned isometric RPGs, you'll start appreciating and liking them for what they are.
