The DRM on steam looks to be close to what the xbone will have, with the exception of the online check. However, to really take advantage of the convenience of steam, you need to be online.

I don't like evrything they are doing, such as forced kinect integration, and the used game policy may be a mistake, but I find it interesting for some to say 'what, no used games? Time to get the Steambox!'
The games are cheaper, the service is better with more functionality and it doesn't cost a monthly fee. That's why people are up in arms about the Xbox One. It has worse features, costs a monthly fee to use and will cause the cost of gaming to increase.

Causing the cost of gaming to increase is pure speculation. While there are a ton of great games, many genres and blockbuster games are under represented. There is also a bunch of filler and indie/niche games. I love me some indie games, but they don't appeal on a broad scale.

XBL as a paid service has been around for about 10 years now. Nothing new there, and is actually a very strong service. I would argue steam probably has less functionality. It is great for playing games, and getting some on the cheap during sales sure. But the XB1 is also toting a bunch of media features that many but not all will be interested in.

I think too many are taking a sensational over reaction to a short hardware reveal that only hints at what will be available. I am not sold, and there are many things I am rolling my eyes over, but I am going to wait and see before I declare the sky is falling.

Fixed that for you. All of these features Microsoft loves to talk about rarely leave the US. We get some support for them here in the UK, but from my understanding most of Europe doesn't get any of it. And Japan doesn't give a damn about the Xbox.

I'm gonna wait and see on the Xbox One, but I think the market for the Wii U vs the PS4/Xbox One is very different in terms of the games available, the features they have, etc. I could see buying a Wii U and one of the others, but to play the newest "generation defining" titles you'll need either the PS4 or XBbox One, especially as most of those "defining" titles are first party and haven't/won't make it to PC. The Wii U won't cut it if you care about staying current. The same can be said for the retro-friendly stuff on PS3/360 (Guardian Heroes, Cave games, Pixeljunk tiles, etc.) - most of thise kinds of games have required a console to play and likely will continue to do so...
Yeah, I think after the Wii and how Nintendo just has been for... forever now, I think I've finally accepted that they're just a different outlet. So I don't really see much reason to compare them myself technically, third party ports are almost -always- going to be worse on Nintendo stuff thesedays, but really who buys Nintendo stuff for third party games? It's been obvious this entire past gen which lasted for ages, so yeah.

It's good and bad, I don't love Nintendo like I used too, but at least it's different compared to what the 360/PS3 offered this last gen. Outside of services and other stuff we're arguing, there really wasn't much that set them apart, but Nintendo are weird and do whatever the hell they want, clearly left field. lol

Lol. Tell me something the Xbox Live subscription can do multimedia wise that the PC can't do for free. PC does online play for free, steam gives you muuuuuuuuuuch cheaper games, you have a MILLION different multimedia options, meaning it's a free market which further drives the cost down of pretty much everything.

Plus, you can do your taxes on it :D.

If a console loses its primary advantage over the PC (mainly the ease of use and pick up and play nature), then there just is no reason for it to exist.

Steam also doesn't have to re-authenticate games online every 24 hours.

I am a PC gamer and have been for 20+ years. You arent selling me on what I don't already know. I was directly comparing steam, or more specifically a steam box, with the newer consoles. It isnt fair to compare the full functionality of a PC to a console.

A console is useful as it has defined specifications that can be used for game optimization. Your games will never be incompatible with hardware. They are now trying to also be a home multimedia center. And for millions, it succeeds at doing so.

The games are still pick up and playm you can play off disc while installing, and the system installs it for you. No drivers to hunt, patches to find, nothing behind the scenes needs be done by the user.

I also have a PC connected to my tv, so I do use that for most of my media functions and just play games on consoles. But we are the niche and we represent a smaller % of the market.
