Anyone Tried Sonic Nexus?

Post by racketboy »

I got this in an email

"I agreed 100% with your article on how to save Sonic the Hedgehog, so when I
saw this project called Sonic Nexus, I immediately thought to tell you. They
have been bouncing around a few engines for a couple years now and have settled
into a groove. It's a totally awesome, custom made, retro Sonic game! I wish
it would appear on WiiWare or XBLA or something, because SEGA needs to buy this
game when they finish it. The way they update the site is a sure sign that they
work on it a lot.

Check it out! http://nexus.hrook.net"

Anybody tried this?

I just tried it, played through the end of the demo (2 stages) I was kind of hoping for a boss :( but oh well. It's actually really impressive, and I hope it eventually comes to be a full game. Definitely feels very old-school sonic-esque.

It's pretty good. One thing I'm especially pleased with is that they managed to nail to 'ching' sound when you get rings, which some commercial retro compilations haven't even been able to do. Over all a good effort. My one grip? The music. Is it just me, or does it sound a little too much like something you'd hear being played in an elevator at the mall?

No offense or anything but you can find a lot of games like this at sonic fan game hq. So it really isn't that special. Still its good for the couple levels they have.

The malls in my area dont have elevators with music. so no. The music was definitely on the fluffy/fruity side though.

The level design was great. i like how the stages were elaborate. The animation for them was iffy. it was hard to decipher whether you could pass through an area or if it was a wall.
Sonic handled very much like he did in the classics. I didn't like how his spindash was slowed down and didnt have as much "umph" to get over hills like it used to. the peel-out technique was a nice addition which did help where the spindash fell short. However, its a bit of a hassle to have to come to a complete stop to spindash, or peel-out.

Taking into consideration that its a beta version im extremely ecstatic to see what these guys/gals have in store for us next.
