You mean the Steambox that wont let you play used games at all, has only digital distrubition, and will also make you install all of your games?

I have a Steambox and it is called my PC and I like it, but it has many of the same complaints levied against the XB1

I think the one difference is that Steam games can be heavily discounted. As I type this, my truly open source Ouya email just arrived in my mailbox. Finally!

This is the main reason I don't have qualms with digital distribution in concept, and in some practice. When I buy a new game for console, it usually goes as follows. Buy game. Play game. Determine if it's worth keeping. If not, sell it to take maybe $20-30 off the next one. On PC, even though I can't resell the game, I can get new games easily under $10. Games released within the last year or two. Good ones.

At that point, the used game argument becomes irrelevant because I'm spending less money in the end anyway.
Older. Not wiser.

Yes, but I can find new current gen console games very discounted as well.

How fast digital prices drop off the XBL shop will be something to monitor.

Took me 2 days to read through the entire thread but I'm finally here.

Anyway, this thing looks dead to me. Seriously.

Games struggled to make a profit during this gen. Next gen games are going to be even more expensive, so you need as big an audience as possible to make the games have a higher chance of being profitable.

Here's the thing about that....the XBone is entirely focused on the rich American crowd. All the extra services are usually not available outside the US (and maybe Canada?). The console will probably again be a no-show in Japan, and the camera and no used games thing will just NOT sit well with most consumers in Europe.

Then there is the always online thing. I understand this is more of a problem in the states where people in rural areas don't have access to broadband, but in general LIMITING your audience is ALWAYS a bad thing.

Sony has been trying to translate its bigger games into obscure languages (getting Sly Cooper 4 and the latest God of War in Greek amazed me, since those games don't really sell that well here to justify the costs, the way some football titles do), and tapping into new markets (anyone remember the PS2's efforts to expand in the Middle East?) to further expand its userbade.

And what does MS do? Make the Xbone feel more of a niche than the Wii U.

Being a success only in their native country, did the oxbox, PC-Engine and Saturn few favors.

Also comparing the no used games thing with steam is a joke. The reason PC gamers are ok with steam is because of the crazy sales, non-intrusive DRM, and it providing a lot of features people like (automatic driver upgrade, steam social tools, workshop support ect. ect.). Xbone doesn't seem to provide anything we want. It provides what publishers, MS, and executives want. Makes sense stock price wise, but not business wise when you have to sell the thing to people.

Anyway, I am for sure staying away from this console and it's a shame for Microsoft cause they only lost me the previous gen for 2 games (Valkyria Chronicles and Little Big Planet for anyone who is curious), but this time they are not even in the race for my money. Wii U or PS4 it is.

I'm gonna wait and see on the Xbox One, but I think the market for the Wii U vs the PS4/Xbox One is very different in terms of the games available, the features they have, etc. I could see buying a Wii U and one of the others, but to play the newest "generation defining" titles you'll need either the PS4 or XBbox One, especially as most of those "defining" titles are first party and haven't/won't make it to PC. The Wii U won't cut it if you care about staying current. The same can be said for the retro-friendly stuff on PS3/360 (Guardian Heroes, Cave games, Pixeljunk tiles, etc.) - most of thise kinds of games have required a console to play and likely will continue to do so...

I think this is the generation where I stop being interested in the state of console gaming entirely.

I am a big pc gamer and a fan of steam, but it is not a joke to compare them. We have no idea what the pricing models will look like. Steam has crazy sales yes, but I can also get new console games cheap from retailers and onlinr sites like Amazon. I rarely buy used current gen games and find deals often.

The DRM on steam looks to be close to what the xbone will have, with the exception of the online check. However, to really take advantage of the convenience of steam, you need to be online.

I don't like evrything they are doing, such as forced kinect integration, and the used game policy may be a mistake, but I find it interesting for some to say 'what, no used games? Time to get the Steambox!'
