Surprised to see an absence of buzz or comments about the tornado tragedy in Oklahoma.

In a political rant for a second... Everyone brings up the gun debate and wants to knee jerk react on that after a shooting tragedy. Yet where is the call for underground shelters or other such preparations for these storms for public places like a school? Or even community shelters per neighborhood? I don't hear much outrage about this, yet nearly 100 people died.

/end rant

As much as I support more standards in protection against tornadoes, this is really apples and oranges. Human crime ≠ natural disasters and complex system of buildings ≠ comparatively simple ban on objects.

I would disagree. Banning an object, especially when so many exist already would have dubious results at best. So it isnt a simple solution and far from an effective gaurantee. Building an underground shelter next to public buildings, especially schools, and perhaps per neighborhood in at risk areas is not that complex. Farmers have been building storm shelters on their property for years.

You obviously can't stop tornados but you can mitigate loss of life.

Stuff like preparations for weather and disasters is handled on the city level. There's zero reason for it to spark a national debate. Besides, nobody is going to take some sort of principled stance against tornado shelters.

The lack of them when a relatively easy preventative measure is available should spark it. It did for the levies in katrina...

Maybe the city would have to implement neighborhood or community shelters, but public schools get funding from multiple levels and get national/state oversight. A higher level of government could easily step in. Gun control is also implemented at state and local levels.

Public schools can barely afford chalk. Chalk.

I grew up in Kansas, and I am shocked that the school and the medical facility did not have underground tornado shelters. Nearly every public building where I grew up had them.

:) But she's already got alternate living arrangements. She'll be living with a coworker and it'll only cost her $60/week. But pretty much she'll only be sleeping there, since she's not allowed to sleep in the house anymore. Basically, once bedtime rolls around, she's gotta go to her apartment.
So they keep track of who is going to/from your apartment? That sucks. I guess they need to make sure that you don't have 20 people living in 1 room or something like that.

Chalk doesn't prevent deaths of students. The funding issues of schools is a different issue. If money can be spent on other preventive and/or safety measures then it can be allocated for this. The federal government allocated funds for the new orleans levy system.

And I am really not a big crusader for this as it may seem. Just frustrated by the different response to this from media and in general compared to recent events like sandy hook, boston marathon, and sandy storm. The death toll of this more than doubles the others combined.
