Lst night, my wife and I watched Don Coscarelli's:



John Dies at the End (2012). It was a tremendously fun mash-up of Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)...and when I say tremendously fun, I really mean it. The acting is campy, the special effects are low budget, and the plot is drug-addled and non-sensical. I enjoyed every minute of it, and - given the tastes of this forum's members - I highly recommend it.

(Also, it is currently streaming on Netflix; so, anyone with an account can watch it instantly!)

I agree completely. Here is a line from the AVClub's review:

"This is a willfully weird story, rendered by Coscarelli in a way that’s meant to appeal to people who are either chemically altered or sleep-deprived."

Since I have been getting between 2 and 4 hours of sleep per night for the past two weeks - hooray for work! - this move, a nice dinner, and a 2/3 of a bottle of wine were really a great, great combination.

A few quick thoughts on SLAP SHOT:

It does drag, but the dialogue makes up for it. I can also see how people who couldn't give a poop about a hockey movie starring "That salad Dressing Guy" wouldn't be invested in it.

To me it is a classic. It's not all about the Hanson Brothers, it's a great and well written and directed story about tough times and sticking to your grounded morals. It's also incredibly hilarious, so that only helps.

SLAP SHOT is a movie that if you can't place yourself in one of the characters shoes, you won't get it. That's fine. But when you connect with a character, you totally connect.

Hockey? check! Humor? check! Violence? check! Boobs with nipples that could cut glass? check! But all of that doesn't make SLAP SHOT a "guy movie". The movie was written by a talented woman, and Lindsay Crouse sparkles as a pissed off woman that I'm sure many women strongly relate too.

The segmented stories of a woman scorned, a group of insane brothers, a business man you could not trust if his tongue was notarized, an aging hockey player....so much goes on and it is amazing that everything still remains coherent .

Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Now the last time I watched this one, it was in the 80s, and I did not get all the jokes. Now that I am much older, I get the jokes, and still dont see why the movie is considered so great. It is a coming of age comedy that breaks the fourth wall and has several very great quotes in it, but the overall plot is somewhat inconsistent and the pacing is poor. It is still a decent movie, that is super quotable.

I put it in the same category as Napoleon Dynamite as a coming of age comedy that everyone else seems to love that I think is only ok.

But I do love me some Wargames...

Now that I am much older, I get the jokes, and still dont see why the movie is considered so great. FBDO is comedy gold, ND is quirky gold. I couldn't put those two movies in the same category whatsoever.

Im not saying that it is bad, or that they are even of the same caliber, just that they are movies that everyone else seems to love that I think is only ok.

Yeah, this. I like FBDO and I like Napoleon Dynamite, but they are very different animals.

Luke, have you watched Gentlemen Broncos, and if so what did you think? I think it might be Hess' best film to date. It's quirky like ND, but also has more meat to it like Nacho Libre (which I also loved, and not because of Jack Black, though I do like Jack Black).

Gentlemen Broncos is really a great film, to me. It's hilarious in the way it makes you feel awkward.

Not bad, but it'd probably be a bit better in 3D.

Also making plans to see "Struck By Lightning" in the near future. I have a code for a free Redbox rental (thanks, Dr. Pepper) and it comes to the Redbox this Tuesday.

What did you think of the ending?

It was different, but in a good way. Like it was something no one could even THINK to see coming.
