I'm thinking of taking a Plug N Play with me on my next vacation and I'm basically asking for recommendations. E.g...
-Arcade based Plug N Plays
-Namco
-Space Invaders
-Mega Drive/Genesis
-Commodore 64
-Famicom/Famiclone
-Atari 2600
Also, I'm thinking of getting a GBA Audio/Composite Video adapter so I could use it on that as well. I mean sure the video would be a bit butchered but it would make for a decent portable plug n play.
Any good recommendations for Plug n Plays?

The C64 one looks awesome, but is pretty rare these days I'm afraid.
The Namco one is pretty fun.
One you don't have on your list that I really like is the Intellevision Plug n Play. Don't worry, it's not shaped like the original Intellevision keypad - it resembles a SNES controller.

I like the Sega Genesis Plug-N-Plays made by Radica. They work well; the controllers bear a reasonable resemblance to the original; and they come with cool little mini Genesis (even smaller than the Model 3).

LOVE!
Sega Retro has a wiki with the list of which games are included in which version. Link
The At@games Sega Plug-N-Play on the other hand is all around crap.

AVOID!

I highly recommend the Space Invaders one as it has some of Taito's best arcade games. I wish Nintendo would make a plug and play with all of their classic arcade games.

I recently picked up the 80 game "console", maybe a better unit? The emulation is not perfect, but its not all that bad. A nice bonus of a built in Genesis cart port. I'm going thru it and will post a full review later.samsonlonghair wrote:The At@games Sega Plug-N-Play on the other hand is all around crap.

The Namco PlugnPlays and the the PowerJoy series are my favorite. Many consider the Powerjoys as cheap, but there are a good variety of import NES games in them. Some also have a cart port making it a PlugnPlay Famicom console.
I reviewed various PlugnPlays and Portables, the OP in the guide is indexed.

Re: Any good recommendations for Plug n Plays?
As mentioned, the Namco ones are great.
Not as portable, but the Atari Flashback (model 2's the best I think since it's actually a real atari 2600 on a chip) is really good. Better video out than the original console, and many of the best games built in including some Activision games.
For the novelty factor, the Arcade Nano Pocket Megadrive games are pretty cool. The sound is pretty bad, and the picture isn't so great either, but they were really cheap when I got a couple so they're still worth it IMO. I had planned to pair one with a tiny car reverse LCD and a box to make a mini arcade cab.
I don't know if it counts, but a Dingoo a320 is pretty decent hooked up to a screen even right out of the box. Once you've loaded it with roms and media it's an awesome unit for the price.

I can vouch for that.BoneSnapDeez wrote:The C64 one looks awesome....
I'll also second the Radica Genesis Plug-N-Plays. I've got the first model (I think) and it plays pretty well.

Re: Any good recommendations for Plug n Plays?
Sorry to deviate from topic, but in addition to recommended PnPs, does there exist a Genesis unit that is handheld with its own screen, can be plugged into a TV, AND has decent emulation (particularly for sound, but obviously for graphics)?
Re: Any good recommendations for Plug n Plays?
Is the Sega Arcade Master in particular any good? It looks like a classic arcade stick and has an SD Card feature.

Is Composite the best Plug n Plays can do?
It may be DTV1 but still.

What are the exact hackable video capabilities and are they better than a 2600?

How is the video out better exactly? Because there exists the whole S-Video mod for the original 2600 instead of RF.Anapan wrote:Not as portable, but the Atari Flashback (model 2's the best I think since it's actually a real atari 2600 on a chip) is really good.
