ummm...aren't those games from Japan? maybe you're saying they play much like games outside of Japan I suppose. i guess the very reason I like Enslaved is mainly because of the character development. While platforming was fairly linear, it's actually the game that encouraged me to go back and replay Uncharted.

There's about a million western games. You need to be a little more specific. Pre-NES era/8 bit/16 bit/late 1990s/early-mid 2000s/modern games? What genre?
That's a very generic list of modern games that you mention in the first post. I don't really see any indication in that list alone which would imply that you simply cant stand Western games at all - which is an absurd notion when you realize there are literally tens of thousands(/100 000+) of Western games when you count all consoles, handhelds, computers and arcade games together. Unless you are very casual or you focus on some very small niche of games, the notion that a gamer couldn't find joy in non-Japanese games is absurd

Both of them are Japanese games
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

yea, I just mentioned in my other post that I'm not looking to go that far into the NES era. I am only willing to go as far as last gen, but most preferably this gen. I know I know, I am missing out on a lot of goodies, but there is just so much I can handle. I am very picky when it comes to playing games outside of Japan as well.

maybe this would help:

1. I prefer third person over first person
2. some cinematic experience.
3. attention to detail in both environment and characters
4. must look somewhat appealing to some extent (doesn't necessarily have to look realistic). I tend to avoid the cartoony stuff for some reason. I guess I rather watch Looney Toons on TV then actually playing the game of similar style. For example, Alice Return to Madness is a style I'm not a fan of (Chinese style where they have characters with exaggerated facial features).
5. love good stories
6. I only like some open worlds.
7. like I said before, prefer recent games. Yea, a bit of that eye candy visual really motivates me to play.

I can't wait to play Eternal Darkness. It took me a while to finally decide on the game after watching some playthroughs. It's one of those games highly praised by many, so I feel like it is my "duty" to play it.

If you're gonna be picky, you should be picky about playing games, period. Why give a pass to a mediocre Japanese game just because it's Japanese?

I never really saw much point in trying to segregate games based on country of origin.

well, it's something you have to learn through time. I've realized that even Japanese developers made crappy games, but even they made great games that I considered as overrated. I mean, if there's a Japanese game I consider mediocre even though is considered as one of the best games ever, I don't normally keep it. To answer your question, yes, I am also picky with Japanese games, but you have to play the bad ones every now and then to realize that. I am just doing the exact same thing with Western games.

There's a lot of games that fit the bill, I'll focus on few horror games since you said you like horror.

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. Realistic looking horror RPG with real time combat, emphasis on dialogue and freedom of choiche/RPG elements. Freely explorable game world with a lot of side quests, but not too open or that unlinear. Has 3rd person view, though you can play from first person perspective too if you want to. It has excellent writing and athmosphere, memorable characters and a good story. It's from 2004, so it doesn't look too old, some of the characters look still really good. You play as a vampire, there's some quite scary missions and there's quite a lot of gore and monsters involved. There are different kinds of vampires to choose from, and the gameplay experience, dialogue and what kind of spells you can get (this game has some really cool spells) depends on which vampire race you play.

As far as pure survival horror games go, there's Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Amnesia the Dark Descent and the Penumbra series. Call of Cthulu and Amnesia are quite similiar to Eternal Darkness with the insanity stuff. All of them are first person view game and that's a good thing, because it makes it a lot more scarier. Espescially Amnesia is well known to be "the scariest horror game of all time", but Cthulu and Penumbra are also high on that list.

Since you said nothing fifth generation and before, I'll recommend some late 90s/2000s stuff:

Half-Life - These are some of the best games in the First Person Shooter genre with an interesting and immersive method of storytelling.

Ratchet & Clank - These are my favorite platformers for the PS2 and PS3. The gameplay's fast and frenetic with constant dodging, firing, and jumping. This series tends to lean towards shooter gameplay, but there's still a nice amount of platforming.

Jak & Daxter - Especially the first title since that's a pure platformer. The next two titles have some gunplay, though it's not as much shooting as the Ratchet & Clank games. These are another of my favorites for the PS2.

Sly Cooper - I've only played the first title in this series, but I really enjoyed it. I missed out on these games when they were first released, but I think the first title is on par with the Jak and Ratchet debuts.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light - I never gave a shit about the Tomb Raider games, but I really liked this one. This game changes the dynamic by being a top down shooter with platforming and puzzle elements, instead of a normal Tomb Raider game.

Roboblitz - This is a fun, quirky physics platformer with cute characters and engaging gameplay. The puzzles and obstacle courses are not only fun, but they also give the player a chance to maneuver in an expansive environment.

Sam & Max - I'm not much of a Point and Click Adventure game player, but these are my favorites in the genre due to their sense of humor.

I play mostly Japanese games too, but I've grown up with Western games and some are really incredible. They have a lot to offer, and a lot of genres that were never really developed in Japan have flourished on my side of the ocean.

-Sly Cooper series - I'll second this. Sly 2 is my favorite game next to Valkyrie Profile and Defender.

-Racing Games - as great as F-Zero and Ridge Racer are, your racing collection isn't complete without Need for Speed III, Burnout, and Race Driver.

-Star Wars games. They used to be seriously awesome.

-Defender & other classic arcade games. Some of the coolest arcade games of all. Robotron, Centipede, Joust, and all the Eugene Jarvis games demand your attention.

-Simulation games - realistic vechicle sims can be really fun and fantastic ones like Mechwarrior 4 are also great.

-Sid Meier's Pirates!

-Grand strategy and RTS games are very different from turn based or grid based games, but you might well enjoy them.

-RPGs - if you're a fan of Japanese games you probably like JRPGs. Try out Planescape, Grimrock, and the other ones everyone loves...

-Old school shooters - even if you prefer 3rd person, you should try Unreal and Quake and stuff.
