I found that the CSY 2100 was the cheapest good SCART to Component transcoder when I bought one. It delivers a clean 240P signal on all the retro consoles and also does 480I when necessary without any glitches once I got the right cables. It's worked well on all my RGB capable consoles.
The audio mod was really easy too - 2 holes drilled, 3 large solder blobs and some hot glue.

Paired with 2 of the cheapest 4-to one SCART splitters I could find on ebay chained together It did everything perfectly...

As mentioned going with SCART RGB can get expensive. I swapped up to a large flatscreen and I'm still pouring money into videogame perfection. Still, that setup will work well for you on your CRT.

Yep, it sounds like this is the case. But given that I'm not super crazy about the best ever image quality, what's the best to look for without breaking the bank (or doing any mods)? Set a limit of say... 20, 30 bucks for the cables at most.

I can guess a few that wouldn't change... but just from the list above, what's the best replacement connection for the Sega systems and the PS1?

I have a 27" RCA Tru Flat CRT & S-video from the SNES looks great. You're right, these TVs look great. Colors pop.

Not worth the $40+ for PAL RGB SCART & $ for a component converter IMO. Maybe if you only have LCDs that drastically blur the image. But on a CRT, man that's some cash. Just my 2¢ :)

For the DC, you could do the VGA box to component for relatively cheap. I believe you can still do VGA output (to component) & stereo red & white out simultaneously. If not, simple 3.5mm to RCA audio will fix the audio to your CRT.

On one console maybe not. For multiple an RGB converter box is worlds cheaper than component mods.

The jump from composite to s-video is a huge improvement but the jump from s-video to rgb is not that huge. Also keep in mind alot of old games were designed using the blurryness of composite to their advantage. Like bushes in the sonic games with s-video they have a checkerboard pattern but composite blurs it to make it look semi-transparent.

Do we have any documented proof anywhere that they were really designed that way? I mean the graphics were all likely made on RGB monitors anyway, so I dunno. Just a thought.

Either way, I'd take clearly seeing the dithered faux-transparency effect over the rainbow banding, blurriness, color bleed, and mess of other issues that composite brings in any day. Especially on the Genesis, which seems to have a much worse composite video output than most consoles.

Plus, Genesis RGB output is awesome. There's just something about the color palette of the systems and the way everything seems to just 'pop' in RGB. It's really nice.

That's the thing. People who support Genesis composite would have more of a case if its quality was near consoles like SNES, not to mention SNES Jr.

Documented proof is impossible to come by, but I think the pictures speak for themselves:

And here: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthr ... mp-RF-COAX!

I think composite looks smoother here.
