Eh, as arrogant as it sounds, I think you have to be pretty damn stupid to not realise the Wii U is an entirely new system. I laughed when people asked if you could play SNES games on a NES and I laugh now.

The problem with continuing the Wii brand though, is whilst they were trying to continue capitalising on the brand, due to its immense success, the gimmick element of the system and the fact it was the console of choice for the casual audience, meant its success would be limited. The casual audience are incredibly fickle by nature and are less likely to have a loyalty to the brand. The Wii was losing its success and strength as a brand since 2009/2010.

As for whether the console will flop or not, I agree with retrodude. Many consoles struggle in their first year. The PS3 did, now it's awesome. Even the PS2 did little to impress me in the first year. Its definitely too early to say. I don't think it will flop, but I think it will be more like the Gamecube. Wii U will never move numbers like Wii did, nor will it sell like PS4/XBOX720. Wii sold mainly because it was innovative to a certain extent, offered something different that caught on, a novelty (I don't think the touchscreen really compares this time, although I do like it), PS4/XBOX720 will sell because core gamers prefer to play core games on supercharged consoles. Wii U will lprobably sell well, due to a large quantity of Nintendo fan base and due to it's bargain price, but it will fall behind and stagnate in the way the GC did. The games will come though, I'm sure, just give it a chance.

I highly doubt it will flop and we've been over this in the Wii U thoughts thread quite a bit now IIRC.

I don't necessarily think it will do Wii and DS like levels of success either.

That said, I'm pretty sure it's the only traditional console I'll have over this next generation.

The games just aren't appealing enough to warrant me spending $350 dollars on the damn thing. I'll pick one up when the deluxe set gets a price cut, and the new Monolith Soft RPG is ready to be released. I'm also crossing my fingers for a new Starfox, and F-Zero sooner than later.

It may be too early to confirm whether it's a flop or not, but there's no doubt that Nintendo has some tough sailin' ahead - especially once the competition rolls out.

Maybe I'm biased because I love the Lego series, but Lego City Undercover is the most fun I've had with a game in ages. It's genuinely funny, the tablet is put to good use, and the game is lovely. It's the game I bought a Wii U for at launch, and though I had to wait, it was worth it. Between that and New Super Mario U, I'm already satisfied. I just want more.

I have to say I'm satisfied with my Wii U too. ZombiU was one of the most engrossing games I had played in a long time. In fact, I'm very keen to start a new game, perhaps on survivor mode. New Super Mario Bros U is immense fun, Nintendo Land is great for multiplayer with the girlfriend and Monster Hunter I haven't played a lot yet but seems cool.

Pikmin 3 is coming out in a few months and I cannot wait for that! The first 2 games in the series are some of my favourite games ever.

Put me down as another satisfied user. I have 150 hours in my WiiU at this point, and I have found plenty to play.

Funnily enough, two exclusives I bought it for ended up being some of my least favorites on the system. ZombiU got old pretty quickly, and while I was hyped up for Lego City, I wasn't nearly as impressed with it as some people.

NSMBU... yes it's the same old tired NSMB look and style. I still maintain that it has the best level design of any 2D Mario game since SMB3. Much better than any of the other entries in the series. And I am damn excited for the super challenging and speed focused Super Luigi expansion DLC coming this summer.

Only game that interests me is Mario. Waiting for the RPGs to hit shelves, then I'll pick up the Wii U.

This applies to every other hobby. Games aren't on the same scale of importance as say whole grain vs white grain for example, and people mix those up all the time. People mistaking the Wii U for another Wii is a minor fallacy at worst. Yes, even ditching the Dreamcast in favour of the PS2 was another harmless fallacy, life goes on etc.

There are still people who are butthurt about SACD, Betamax and tons of other electronic formats that 99.999999% of organisms on the planet give zero shit about.
