Gaming and Practicality (or lack thereof)

I dated a girl who liked games once and would never do it again. I know that sounds hypocritical, but I hated fighting for screen time and watching her get so sucked in that I couldn't get any attention for literally several consecutive hours.

LOL, I don't think that would bother me, but I can see where you're coming from. It's funny hearing gamers talk about the actual CONS of having a gamer girlfriend. I've never really thought much about that. The only thing I could think of that would piss me off is a girl deciding to use my 360 profile or loading up one of my saves and messing with things. Girl has to have her own profile and her own save games. I'm very much a what's mine is mine and what's yours is yours kind of person. Sharing some things is okay, don't get me wrong. But for me, a relationship only work when you establish ownership and set some boundaries.

Course I also believe in prenups for marriages which seems to turn off some women. Maybe I'm lucky to be single

Only other thing I could think that would be annoying is her trying to get me to play stuff I don't want to play.

You should mod an Xbox and then you won't really need the older consoles. I've found emulation is near perfect, especially SegaCD, and just easier than on the PC since you don't have to deal with Windows.

I'm pretty sure clicking an .exe file is allot easier than modding an Xbox I still don't get why everybody thinks a modded Xbox is so damn great.

Exactly. I decided to take the PC + Maximus Arcade route myself. Very user friendly to set up.

Now that we're completely off topic (if this post ever really had a topic), here's a true story. I knew this girl who worked at a Gamestop once. (She was young, she needed the money.) Anyway, she was a beautiful girl, fun, smart, interesting. You know, the kind of girl that most people would gladly gouge out an eye to date. Everytime me and my friends would go in to look for cheap Xbox games, we'd talk and flirt with.

So one of my friends developed a huge crush on her. We teased him about it, but figured it to be fairly hopeless, seeing as she had a boyfriend. Dudebro, we called him. Only played Halo or something similar. Drank really shitty beer. One of those guys. You know the type. And my friend was, well, um, not the greatest looking of guys. But my friend wouldn't let it go. Unbeknownst to us, he actually managed to procure a job there, just to be near her. Didn't actually need the job, of course, but he did get sweet discounts for awhile.

So, over the course of a couple months, and constant attention, it got to the point where she would pretty much be over at my friends place after work, playing one game or another. The she dumped her boyfriend. And to our amazement, she actually started dating my friend. Within six months, they were living together. Of course, it could be that my friend had much better beer, but I like to believe that Mario Kart had more to do with it.

Love and Gamestop. Who would have thought? Never underestimate the power of video games, and terrible boyfriends.

Agreed, that's why I reserve RPGs for when she's knitting something I know will keep her attention for a long time, or occasionally after she's gone to bed.

I actually enjoy knitting. I think the same hand-eye coordination that goes into gaming can easily translate into knitting. Plus, a great way to meet cool girls. And get awesome scarves. Maybe I could get a Mario pattern...

Yeah, my wife and I feel like knitting and gaming fill very nearly the same roles in our lives. Hand-eye coordination, repetition, intense concentration, buying 400 things you've drooled over when you know you can only use one of them at a time.

The big plus is when I say something like "Hey sweetie, I think I want to buy an Atari Jaguar" she doesn't say "You have five things hooked to the TV already and three more in the basement," she just understands it's part of the hobby, much like her having a metric ton of yarn in the closet.

I'm pretty sure she had a 1-up mushroom pattern for scarves and hats at one time, I think it came from the Craft zine blog.
