The only time two in a spot is annoying is if they're entirely different titles and they're like "lol tie".

But if you're making a list and Super Mario Bros. 3 comes up, it should be all incarnations of Super Mario Bros. 3. Metroid should include Zero Mission, etc.

I think maybe it's important to remember the reason you want to make the list in the first place ... nitpicking iterations or version differences is likely not the goal.
What about Street Fighter II v. Turbo v. Super v. Alpha?
Well the Alpha series is considered completely separate from the SF2 series so I don't know why there'd be any contesting there...

I was abbreviating, and thinking of Alpha 2 v. Alpha 3. I may still be wrong, since I'm not really familiar with the Alpha games. Point about SFII still stands, though.

Alpha 1-3 are basically all upgrades building onto the same core game, just like Super/Turbo is just buliding onto SF2. Well, technically Alpha 3 has different endings and story setups or whatever so story-wise it's more of a sequel to Alpha 2, but who actually cares about the story in Street Fighter?

But yeah I get your point, just being nitpicky.
