Game Gear collecting

Post by Krejlooc »

I'm putting the final touches on a consolized game gear project that I've been working on and I've arrived at the point where it's time to start buying some games. Now, to preface, I've had a game gear since 1991 when I picked up a Sonic the Hedgehog bundle and Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion (an incredible 1-2 punch, btw), and I have about 40 or so Game gear games already. Everything is missing their boxes, and only a few games have their manuals. Hence, I'm starting over, basically. Rebuying anything worth getting, even if I already have the game loose.

A couple of things thus far: If the game exists on the Master System, A) I likely already own the SMS version and B) Unless there are drastic changes (i.e. Sonic 1, where there are significant graphics and level-layout changes) then I'm not interested in it. This is a list of purely GG exclusive titles. Also, I will not pick up anything unless it's CIB.

That said, I'm damn surprised at how cheap it is to collect for the game gear! There appears to be little to no collecting value for this stuff, even boxed, as it's all gone for dirt cheap compared to, say, MSX or Famicom stuff. Here's what I've got so far:

Samurai Shodown

Fatal Fury: Special

Fantasy Zone Gear

GG Shinobi II

Tails adventure - I also have the US version

Image

Shining Force Gaiden 2 - I also have the US version

Gunstar Heroes

Ristar

Tempo Jr

Coca Cola Kid

GG Aleste 2

I also bought a boxed game gear console, just so I can have a boxed GG to go along with these boxed games. I found the same model and box that I got when I first got my GG new:

I'm considering Panzer Dragoon Mini right now. It appears to be the priciest game gear game released. I've also picked up boxed copies of all the US Sonic games (and I still had Tails Adventure from when it was new).

Is there anything major or obvious missing thus far? Again, GG exclusives only, so no stuff like Battletoads or Earthworm Jim, as I have those games for my SMS already.

I guess it depends on where you look.

Its gotten dry here (where I live) on finding Gamegear games. I do most of my hunting at fleamarkets, so I really dont do Online.

All I find are GOLF games and the first sonic game. Not complaining on the second tho, but I have them already.

I mostly do find some bundles in a carrying case with the same five or six games. No battery covers and dust inside the screen.

I havent seen a boxed gamegear game in a few years as well. I should consider myself lucky if I find one with the plastic case.

Its just a novelty now, but I guess the TV adapter is Useless now in the US. If you live along the Mexican border you can watch some Analog TV with it.

I dont know if its a turn off for the average collector, but theres also the problem of the caps inside the system that causes sound failure in these old gamegears now

And video.

Kind of interested in the consolized game gear. Any pictures? I've got a parts Game Gear thats been sitting around forever, might be a fun project.

The only Game Gear title I really bother playing is Shining Force, if you don't have it it's definitely worth picking up.

I recommend GG Shinobi 1 and Ren And Stimpy: Quest For The Shaven Yak. Also, I think Jurassic Park might be different from the Genesis version and it's also very good.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

Cool stuff.

I'm looking for the Phantasy Star, Lunar, and Shining Force titles. You have those?

Looks like you've been hitting up hit-Japan.

I've played through Panzer Dragoon Mini with emulation, and I'd not really recommend it outside of purely for collection purposes. It's novel as a GG Panzer Dragoon game, but really nothing special. The difficulty level is also childish in comparison to the SS games. (Which is not surprising, given the packaging.)

I don't really collect for handhelds, but if I were collecting for the GameGear, I would definitely pick up Sylvan Tale, Last Bible (off shoot of the MegaTen series, but it's also on the Game Boy, so I don't know if that works with your 'exclusives only' policy) Madou Monogatari series, and Defender of Oasis (Sadam Crusader).

Also, you are now required to provide updates on this consolized GG, in the future.

Also^2 I'm fairly certain Shining Force Gaiden II is one of the Gaiden games included in Shining Force CD....

Too many people to quote, I'll just reply as I see the comments:

1) Yeah I know Panzer Dragoon Mini is pretty garbage. You hit the nail right on the head - I want it for collection purposes. I have every other Panzer Dragoon game, and getting this one would make for an awesome clean sweep of the series. If I ever wanted to resell them, being able to claim the -*COMPLETE*- panzer dragoon series including not just Saga but Mini would fetch me a pretty penny.

2) Jurrassic Park was actually released on the SMS. I have both the GG and SMS versions. Terrific games, definitely the best JP games regardless of system and actually one of the best Sega 8-bit games across both systems.

3) I have Shining Force Gaiden 2 - both the JPN and the US copies. It was released here as Shining Force: Sword of Hajya, and also on Shining Force CD as the second chapter. I'm not too interested in the Phantasy Star Gaiden or the other SF games because, while I can speak and read quite a lot of japanese (took 4 years of it at university) I still prefer my games in english.

4) I've been looking for Slyvan Tale as well. I hear it's a Zelda-like and that is always cool with me.

5) I've already replaced all the caps on the GG I'm consolizing (it was the first thing I did) and I have a second game gear with the caps replaced as well, along with an LED screen mod. These two GGs are going to a friend in Estonia in a few weeks who is going to install a better controller port mod than I could do myself, and is going to build me some custom controllers for the thing, including one with rapid fire.

The consolized GG doesn't really have much to show right now, just video running out of the game gear via a SCART cable to a TV. It looks like a normal game gear right now. After I have controller ports installed, I plan on building a nicer box to make it look and feel more like a console. I'm installing controller ports in the second game gear, too, so you can play fighting games with 2 controllers on your TV (or play normal 2-player game gear screens using the second screen if you need to).

I also have like 6 or so other game gears in varying conditions. Some are completely dead due to caps dying, some still work. They're all pretty much left over stuff for scraps and parts. I guess I have another working GG on the way in the boxed one above.

You don't have any game gear games I'm interested in, unfortunately, but man you have some other stuff that is tempting me. I'm really fighting the urge to buy that Married with Children board game, for example.

EDIT: Ha! I can even tell the year that came out. It had to have come in 1990, season 4, because Marcy doesn't have Jefferson in that picture, but Steve is gone too, so it had to have been during that awkward season when she was single.
