What infuriates me about your situation is that I bet you dollars to donuts the person that did this to your car does have insurance or could afford to pay out of pocket.

Something like that happens to my fathers 1959 Cadillac Eldo when I was a child. Let me tell you that repairing frame damage on a finned car is damn near impossible. My father was very level headed but he lost his shit when he came out of our local restaurant. He spent the better part of a decade painstakingly tracking down parts and such. Let me tell you, it's damn hard to find a pink/white 59 Eldo. He got it fixed but it never looked as good again. What cowards. Who rear ends a car like that and doesn't find the owner.

I heard something potentially disturbing on the news a little while ago (CBS if you care). Apparently, the Saudi national they're questioning was injured in the blast and was trying to get away when some random bystander tackled him and turned him over to the nearest cop, who apparently took him without a second thought. I sincerely hope they're not going to scapegoat the guy just because he's an arab who happened to be in the vicinity, but I fear the worst. If I'm proven wrong, I'll be the first to say so, but right now, I'm inclined to believe he's innocent and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Pretty sure they raided his apartment and came up empty.

No use in speculating anything about that situation right now I think. We'll know more about what actually happened soon enough.

I hadn't heard that, but that's good news. Hopefully that means they'll let him go soon. My big concern is that just as the worst of the anti-Muslim sentiment is starting to finally die down, this will start the whole mess all over again and we'll be back to square one. I'm not Muslim, but I am very much anti-bigotry and, I hate to say, in retrospect, 9/11 brought out the worst in us at the same time it brought out the best.

It wasn't just Muslims either who were affected. The Seikh community also saw a lot of misdirected rage.

For the record, the Taliban has already declared they were not involved in any way.

As for the Saudi student's apartment: http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/219862 ... on-bombing
Police apparently pulled out several large bags, but no idea what was in them. They've also apparently labeled the student a person of interest but have declined to call him a suspect.

The most likely scenario is that those men had nothing to do with the bombing, but they knew they'd be targeted and were trying to get out of dodge, which I don't blame them for one bit. Here we go again...

Smile/Frown: My birthday is actually on May 20th, despite what I put on my profile info. My Father in law called and mentioned (not asked) that he would be stopping by this weekend to drop off my Birthday gift...a ladder.

Cool. I need one. I think. Maybe. Probably not, but okay. Free ladder.

I plan on pressure washing the house myself after getting the ladder, but there is one issue: I have a three story house and he plans on buying an eight foot ladder. That's a waste of his money as I need something in the 13-17 foot range (which costs way more than I expect him to spend).

So it's an incredibly nice and very odd gesture which I will accept, and I appreciate his kindness, but...

1) A Lowe's Hardware gift card would be fine.
2) Don't call and tell me when you will visit. Ask.
3) Will have to cancel previous plans as to not upset my wife.
4) My wife asked "what do you plan on cooking them for their dinner?"
5) Father in law wants my wife to purchase the ladder for him and then pay her back. My wife drives a Mazda 3 and I drive a Focus; she can't transport a proper ladder with either of our cars.

I'm more than fine with saying I am self centered at the fact that I get a little pissed when I get gifts that aren't for me, but more for the people who give them to me. My wife is usually TERRIBLE at giving gifts that I want. Instead of Bioshock Infinite she'll probably buy me a pair of khaki shorts (which I don't wear) from Old Navy (which probably will fall apart after one wash cycle).

Don't get me wrong. I am very, very appreciative of any gift and will accept any gift with a smile, but buying something for someone that you want is void of tact and lacks a bit of thoughtfulness to a point. I can always donate the item to a charity, which will provide more of a reward, but I hate to see my in-laws waste their money.

Reminds me of when Homer bought Marge a bowling ball.

...Whoa. I just gave myself a good idea. I have my own bowling shoes, maybe I can return some of my gifts and finally buy my own personalized bowling ball.
