Takumi's Night Raid is now available on MAME (0.148u3). Though it's still flagged as 'not working' I think the main issues are with the sound, so it's playable at least.
I've played it briefly on PS1 before, though I had no idea what I was doing. Still not really sure what's going on... The score multiplier can be positive or negative so you can actually end up with a minus score. In true Takumi tradition, it's not exactly pretty, but probably worth a look anyway for its unusual gameplay...
What shmup are you playing now?
Re: What shmup are you playing now?
I just received Super Fantasy Zone for Mega Drive in the post the other day. Seems to only have been released in the UK and the prices reflect that. Finally caved and bought a cart only copy. Awesome fun. So far I'm only getting to level 4 (maybe 5 once). I love the Fantasy Zone games but I'm not very good at them. I think I've had trouble getting to sleep because playing this game before bed is making me too tense!

Been playing Ibara and Ibara Black Label the last few days. Set myself the fairly lowly goals of making it past Stage 2 in Ibara and getting past Stage 3 in Black Label.
I've played it on and off before, but I wasn't actually aware of all the different ship options in Ibara (I thought they were just in Black Label) or even the attacks. Once I discovered the super-powerful bomb (hold down bomb button) then it got a bit easier. (Un)Pro tip: if you're playing a shmup then make sure you know what each button does. Doh!
Anyway, Stage 3 and 1.8 million in Ibara and Stage 4 and 6 million in Black Label. I suppose the next goal is to make it to the extend at 10 million in BL...

Salamander. This cart seriously looks cooler than any cart the west ever got.

Ha ha, this has happened to me many times. I remember watching a Raiden Fighters replay, after playing the game for months, and thinking, "wtf, you can make the medals go to 100k? You can fucking graze?"DocHauser wrote:Been playing Ibara and Ibara Black Label the last few days. On the plus side, you are getting closer to realizing the excellence of the original Ibara.
Since I was sucking at CC tonight, I decided to try out Blue Wish Resurrection Plus. Went for the middle difficulty, "Normal", and in one run got the 1cc with two lives to spare.
I think this is the fourth time I've lazily decided to try a shmup and randomly cleared it on the first go.

Yeah, I'd be up for an Ibara high-score thread. I'm playing it on MAME; haven't actually seen it in any arcades round here. Same goes for MMP and Pink Sweets. I guess they weren't as popular as other recent Cave games.

Yeah, the Yagawa Cave games are probably their least popular, along with Dangun Feveron. I always found it odd that people LOVE Cave, and people LOVE Garegga, but very few people like Cave's Garegga.
I'm playing em in MAME too. Luckily, there is very little slowdown in the pcb, its really only noticable in a part of stage 3. I'm not sure if it was the WR holder, or just a really great Ibara player, but someone that gets crazy scores on the pcb went and played the ps2 port, and got just about as high of a score, just to prove that it was completely do-able.

Re: What shmup are you playing now?
Just cleared Touhou Lotus Land Story on normal. I was mainly checking out some PC98 games because I wanted to play Flame Zapper Kotsujin, but ended up playing some of the early Touhous as well. Got to the stage 5 boss in LLS on my first attempt, and that was before I realised there was a focus button.
Once I'd set up my control pad properly, I was able to clear it a few goes later. I'm not a huge Touhou fan, but I kinda enjoyed this. The visuals make things a bit hard to see at times, but the levels and boss fights are shorter than the later games, plus the bullet patterns tend to be faster and less dense too.
