Looks like Clannad is the way to go. It's on a few 'VNs for noobs' lists & also seems to represent the genre well. I'll play it in a week or two then feedback here

It's an enjoyable game, and absolutely huge. You can seduce practically everyone you meet in the first half, including a teacher! Some of the characters will get on your nerves, but you'll probably like one of the girls too.
