Games that also have Defender/Fantasy Zone style controls?

Post by 4ppleseed »

Hi all,
second question of the week :D

Can you think of any other examples of SHMUPS that have the Fantasy Zone controls of pushing left turns and fires you left, pushing right turns and fires you right

Example:

My history of the control type basically goes Defender - Fantasy Zone.... and nothing else.

Any others out there you can think of?
Many thanks, as always :D

With Vanguard you can fire from the back of the ship but you can't actually turn it around can you? My memory is a bit rusty, I'll give it a go on my MAME machine.

Defender does not push left or right with the stick in the Arcade, only up and down. REVERSE has its own button which adds to the Defender style of game play. But yes, you change directions, move and fire in the opposite direction. As for Vanguard, no you cannot turn around, it is a four direction shooter but done with a second set of directional fire buttons. Is this what you are meaning? A TWINSTICK style of game, one for movement and another for shooting?

Right you are. I'm thinking more like Fantasy Zone.

Although I quite like Defender, I think the controls are clunky.

It is possible to have controls as described here and still do all the manoeuvres you can with "reverse"+"thrust" on Defender, except you don't need to "adapt" your brain to the counter-intuitive control.
I.e. If you are going right at some speed and "flick" left (without continuing to press left), you would face left but keep moving right (so you could "fly" right and shoot left). Only if you keep pressing left would it slow down and start moving left. That would be as if you had pressed "reverse" once and then kept "thrust" pressed. The opposite would happen if you were flying left and pressed right. I.e. the first press of a direction faces that direction, and only continuing to press it thrusts to accelerate in that direction.

There is a good defender "clone" on the Amiga called Overkill. IIRC it controls just like that, although it has been a while since I played it so maybe it slows down before actually turning, which would indeed remove some of the strategical manoeuvres you can pull off in Defender.

Uridium 2, also on the Amiga and already suggested above, is very, very good IMO. It is a top-down perspective but it scrolls left and right. You have to progressively destroy a big ship in a plane below where you are flying - you do this with a secondary weapon (bomb / torpedoes) which has a targeting reticule (but it does not "lock" like the lasers in Layer Section). To destroy each of these huge dreadnoughts you will take several passes of bombing, so you can either turn at will or your ship will auto-turn when you right the boundaries of the stage. All the while you are harassed by enemy fighters etc. which you can destroy with your primary shot.
