And also, what the hell is a kuwanger?
Kuwanga is a japanese bug that is like a cross between a roach and a beetle.
You mean like a stag beetle?

And now I wonder what the MMX music sounded like on PC.
Just looked up a stag beetle and that is exactly what it is. I never knew there was an english name for that animal.

this is some of the PC version's music:

those recordings sound slightly off, likely because they come from emulation. I have a 486DX rig I've built to play old dos games with a Soundblaster 32 inside and it sounds slightly less farty on real hardware. But still, that sounds so much more normal to me than the organ-sounding SNES versions. I remember being thrilled when I got the DOS version of MMX, half because it came with an awesome 6-button controller, and half because I was dying to play the game and didn't have an SNES. The DOS port is really good, especially for the time. The only port I'd rate above it from that era (this was all pre-windows 95) would be Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which blows even the 3DO version away.

Wow, having grown up with the SNES version, the DOS port music sounds strange, yet delightfully retro. That is really awesome!

I didn't get the SNES version until like 2 years ago, because I was dying to replay the game. I couldn't play it, the music just sounded too off for me. That is actually what pushed me to build my 486DX rig.

The Dos version has a bunch of tiny changes, too.

Most noticeable is that all vehicles are gone. but this is from a time when console->PC ports were usually awful and completely different games. For the time, that was an amazing conversion. I bought it without knowing it'd be such a good port and was thrilled that it was so close to the original. It was close enough that I picked up a players guide for the SNES version and was able to use it to play through the PC version, at least.

My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I also noticed while watching that video that Chill Penguin is much faster for the DOS release. If anything, it looks more challenging. Now I kind of want to try it...

Luke wrote:Zelda II The Adventure of Link is probably my least favorite of the series. The game is more repetitive than Super Mario Bros. SOS over, and over, and over. And when the game does mix it up, you turn into a fairy and go through key-holes. Yippie!

I guess it would be fair to say I haven't given this game a fair shake, so keep that in mind. But that's not due to a lack of trying. Link was THE game when I was in elementary school that all the kids were playing, while I was more of a Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania kid. I played it with friends, but Link left me bored. I play once in a while, and still can't get into it.
I've heard the complaint that it's too hard, I've heard the complaint that it strays too far from the Zelda formula. And I've heard the complaint that people want the top-down view back for the action. I've even heard the complain that the game's clues are too cryptic (although I don't agree with that one).

But this is the first time I've ever heard the complaint that it's too repetitive. For an NES game, it mixes things up pretty dang well. You have the overhead map. You have side-scrolling action sequences. You have full-fledged dungeons. You have towns with NPCs to interact with. You have an open-feeling world (as far as NES games allow). And you all kinds of attacks, items, and magic to use. Plus the RPG elements makes the combat more satisfying than just slaying enemies for rupees. There's even mazes.

One important aspect is narrative. In Link's Awakening I felt a connection to the world I was in, the inhabitants and the story. I loved the little side quests and forming a relationship with Marin and the other dude who's name I forget. LTTP seemed to be missing that. It often felt like I was just running around a huge open world, from one dungeon to the next. Sometimes I also felt the game wasn't helpful in helping me in what I need to do next and I used a walkthrough a few times. Although, some may say this is good because the game doesn't hold your hand and you can discover things for yourself, I just feel like I said before, I was running around from one place to the next.
If you feel the need for a hand-holding adventure, then you must REALLY hate Super Metroid, that is the loneliest game ever, and it doesnt ever tell you where to go or what to do!
Actually I really like Super Metroid. I know, my opinions are all broken.

It happens. I love GTA style games, and I love Spider-Man, but the Ultimate Spider-Man game didn't do it for me.
