Since I've had the means to buy them myself, I've tended to get consoles sometime while they're current.

I don't tend to get them at launch though.

All of them. The only new console I got new was the GBA SP, and that was a Christmas gift. What a wonderful gift that was...

for me it's the dreamcast. I remember I only had 1 friend that actually had one (everyone else having a ps2 or xbox) and going over his house and playing sonic adventure, marvel vs capcom and the nfl 2k games. i was was pretty jealous at the time.

Just the Saturn and N64 all other consoles I have to date were purchased during their respective console cycles.

It was just the Saturn for me, but it wasn't entirely my fault. I was too young, and it was too expensive. My grandparents caught the Playstation in some "going out of business" sale. I'm anticipating the day I actually get to play one.

Some relatives are visiting for the weekend, and they brought my Dreamcast and Saturn from Katrina. The Dreamcast still thinking (Survived a Fire and a Flood). That Saturn is completely destroyed. I believe the Dreamcast only got rained on when the roof got partially torn back, where as the Saturn decided to take a swim... (I've said in another thread that I bought the Saturn a week before Katrina. Never even got to play it)

I have a spare Model 2 Saturn that doesn't work. It powers on, but all you get is a black screen. If you'd know how to fix it, I'll let you have it.

Most?

I got my NES in 91. On deaths door.

Got the Genesis and Sega CD in 93. Still mildly relevant but not for long.
Got SNES in 94, again, late lifecycle.

Got PS1 in 97. Fairly early for me actually.
Got an N64 in 99, fairly late in life.

Got a Dreamcast in 01 knowing it was dying.
Did grab a Gamecube in 01 only weeks after launch.
Got Xbox and PS2 in 03.
Got GBA in 02 or 03.

Did have a stretch as an early adopter. Got 360, DS and Wii at launch. That was short lived.

Got a PS3 in 11. Got a 3ds in 12 but only because I wanted a DS and price was close enough to be worth it. Grabbed PSP in 12 as well.

Those are the ones I grabbed even close to their time in stores. Saturn, Turbografx, 3DO, Jaguar, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Game Gear, etc were all grabbed years after they we4e dead and buried.

The only console I would say I passed on when it was "new" would be the Wii. Just sorta stayed away from it due to the whole "gimmicky and casual" stigma that was thrown around towards it.

Just got into it about a year and a half ago and it was cool to see how extraordinarily different it felt from most of the games I was playing on PS3. It easily reinvigorated my interest in "modern" gaming.

I also suppose you could put the DS in there as well. But now that I've got a 3DS I'm able to experience those games too.

I recommend the DS version of Dragon's Lair. Best port of the arcade game I've ever played.
